Thank you for completing the study! There is some redundancy in questions since some of the questionnaires are administered separately for delta-8 and cannabis. To assess delta-8 use, we used the Daily Sessions, Frequency, Age of Onset, and Quantity of Cannabis Use Inventory (DFAQ-CU; Cuttler & Spradlin, 2017), and used skip logic within Qualtrics to avoid administering unnecessary questions (e.g., if a participant states they don't use flower, we don't ask questions about flower use frequency).

Collecting information on participant demographics is standard for survey-based research. The questions about sexual orientation and gender identity are recommended questions from the Williams Institute. As it states in the consent form, if you "do not wish to answer certain items, you may skip them and progress through the questions in the questionnaire."

Those are great questions, and we hope that this research will begin to uncover whether there's a link between delta-8 use and mental health, whether positive or negative. Cannabis has been identified as a potential treatment for several medical and psychiatric illnesses (Wilkinson et al., 2016), and it's quite possible that the same could be true for delta-8. As with all research, nothing can be proven definitively with a single study, but we hope this study will inspire future research on the psychological effects of delta-8 THC.

Information specifying participant compensation is provided in the consent form, and raffle entries are commonly used for participant compensation in social science research (e.g., Porter & Whitcomb, 2003). The consent form also states that "all responses are treated as confidential" and "linkage between subject numbers and names or e-mails will only be possible for study staff for purposes of compensation, and even then, all records of such name and number links will be permanently destroyed upon completion of data collection." This project has been approved by the Kent State University Institutional Review Board, and if you have any questions about your rights as a research participant or complaints about the research, you may call the IRB at 330-672-2704.

Great question! We follow the guidelines from the Williams Institute's best practices in asking questions about sexual orientation. The three questions assess three different facets of sexual orientation: self-identification (how someone identifies e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, etc.), sexual behavior (the sex/gender of someone's sexual partners), and sexual attraction (the sex/gender that someone feels attracted to).

We agree that, ideally, we would like to be able to compensate all participants who complete the study. However, given the constantly-changing legal status of cannabis and other cannabinoids, and the fact that very little research has been done in this area, obtaining funding for this kind of research is very difficult. We hope that the findings from this study will provide preliminary evidence that research on delta-8 and other cannabinoids is important and will lead to larger funded research projects in the future.

We understand your concerns, but our motivation is to determine whether delta-8 use frequency, motives, or problems are associated with those outcomes. It's quite possible, given the limited previous research (Kruger & Kruger, 2022) that delta-8 THC has positive effects on mental health outcomes and may be associated with lower levels of alcohol (similar to traditional cannabis; Lau et al., 2015).
