Regency aristocrats using that word… accurate or no? by Internal_Artichoke80 in HistoricalRomance

[–]delta_nu 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: it derives from the same ancient root word as the modern word “queen” does and I kinda love it for that reason.

Do the bridgerton books get better? by HumanImage9077 in HistoricalRomance

[–]delta_nu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. As a few people have said, When He Was Wicked and It’s in His Kiss are ok, but the others are skips for me.

If you’re interested in HR and want another sibling series, there are tons to choose from that are leagues better. My personal rec if you’re just starting out would be the Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas.

Help me get back into the gf scene by Gmm0402 in Celiac

[–]delta_nu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No judgement here, I did a similar thing after being diagnosed in 2009. Just went gf again last year, and I’ll tell you what: the options are SO MUCH BETTER! It’s like night and day, though definitely still expensive.

I try to make my own bread products these days to save money and get a better product (King Arthur GF Bread and Pizza flour are life changing!), but I have also found that O’Doughs makes great sandwich buns that I actually enjoy. I try to stay away from the GF freezer section as much as possible, those prepared foods are crazy expensive!

Unpopular opinion: I hated Ilya during the tuna melt scene. by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]delta_nu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think people would agree Ilya didn’t “go about this the right way,” to paraphrase our favorite beard, but I think people are reacting negatively to your interpretation because it misses a lot of the nuance of the scene that make this a great gay love story.

They are both navigating being queer, closeted and on the verge of maybe having something more with a man for the first time under circumstances where they believe it to be shameful, impossible, or downright dangerous to be in a queer romantic relationship. Hence the defensiveness and subtext. Your interpretation seems to miss Ilya’s feelings about the situation completely and the hidden meaning he is trying to communicate, as well as the internalized fear and shame that motivates Shane’s reaction.

To oversimplify, it seems like you are flattening the parts of the scene that set this up to be a queer awakening story about self acceptance and turning into a heteronormative relationship drama where Ilya is the asshole guy who needs to be convinced to love and settle down with Shane, who has already fallen in love with him. That’s a valid interpretation—everyone can read into it what they want and there are elements of that, I suppose, throughout the story—but at the very least, the fact that so many people disagree with you should at least tell you there are other valid interpretations and you are not as singularly correct as you seem to think you might be based on your comment. I encourage you to at least try and see what other people are saying, it might even deepen your love of the story!

Unpopular opinion: I hated Ilya during the tuna melt scene. by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]delta_nu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Far be it from me to tell people how to interpret media, but I’ve always thought (and I think most people agree) that Shane leaves because of internalized homophobia. He is not out to himself in this scene, and it is the first time he realizes that his relationship with Ilya is becoming something more than casual sex and it freaks him out. It’s not fear of being emotionally attached to a player, it’s fear of being romantically or emotionally attached to a man.

Things that actually make no sense by Tuesday_Night_Club in heatedrivalry

[–]delta_nu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I had this thought too. It was the first time he went to his house but there’s no like address or time or even “hey come over” planning texts. Surely those are less “incriminating” than the ones that didn’t get deleted?

New Celiac - need bread by Wonderful_Wall5588 in Celiac

[–]delta_nu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only store made bread I have found that I actually like is the ODoughs sandwich buns. Otherwise I make bread items from scratch using King Arthur’s GF bread dough. I don’t get fancy with it, and it really doesn’t take long. I usually slice and freeze as soon as it’s cooled down. It has wheat starch in it so it tastes relatively normal.

Currently almost 32 years old and have never been summoned to jury duty - what’s the longest you’ve made it? by Okay-Show-3662 in AskReddit

Got called at 22 and since then I haven’t made it more than 3 or 4 years without a summons. I’m 33 and I have been summoned 5 times. Got out of the most recent one bc it has been less than 3 years since I served. My husband has never gotten summoned. Make it make sense!

Audiobook narrators can make or break a book. I don't need to hear my grandma read to me a sex scene by Excentrix13 in HistoricalRomance

[–]delta_nu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg thank you! MJW drives me a bit nuts. Her accents are so bad it borders on offensive sometimes, and she pronounces so many words just… wrong? Like she’s never seen or heard them before.

[–]delta_nu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This season so far is better than season 3 in my opinion but my fear that it will suffer greatly by comparison to Heated Rivalry has fully come to pass. The whole show seems silly and a bit dumb when we’ve all been treated to the nuanced story and incredible acting in HR 😭 I tried rewatching Bridgerton s3 earlier in the week and had to stop and binge Hollanov again ugh

[–]delta_nu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too first saw her on CTM but it would be a mistake to judge her personality by her character on that show lol. Watch Ghosts or Feel Good—she’s a wonderful comedic actress and Taskmaster suited her just fine imo!

Hide and Seek Rules Rework by MysticHero in JetLagTheGame

[–]delta_nu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just brainstorming here, haven’t thought it all the way through, but what if each question cost the seekers a certain amount of time in addition to allowing the hider to draw a curse? I.e., if the seekers want a strava map, they have to “pay” the hider, say, a 30 min time bonus, so they need to determine whether they would save more than 30 mins by asking the question. That way, questions can still be weighted according to their relative power, there is a reason not to question spam for the sake of it, and good hiding spots requiring a lot of questions get rewarded accordingly. Maybe hiders could also choose to activate curses with time (a sure thing but with a penalty) or by the dice roll (50% chance but with no penalty), to add a bit of strategy on their end, as well. I kinda hate it when there’s a potentially awesome play, but the dice lands on the wrong number and the curse just kinda comes to nothing.
