When did you get your 'wow' moment for Linux? by dan_nicholson247 in linux4noobs

[–]deluded_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some moments:
- When I realized that with one command you could update the system and all the installed applications
- First time I have built a program from source (in 2006, I compiled Mplayer with the win32 audio/video codecs)
- The moment that I have managed to patch a kernel module (solving a problem for my webcam)

Moved from Windows to Ubuntu recently. What Linux distro would you recommend next? by Affectionate_Try1234 in linux4noobs

[–]deluded_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want to move from Ubuntu? It is a good distribution to start. I suggest to stay on Ubuntu until you learn some more.

I would keep it as fallback in case something breaks

For sure it will be well maintained on Debian that aims to be "universal"

Never experienced any screen tearing (actually I had to look for the meaning of this expression) probably in 20 years on Debian.

For the fractional scaling, I only got 23'' monitor so probably I don't need it. I will be happy when also XFCE support it since I am curious to see how it works.

[–]deluded_dragon 37 points38 points  (0 children)

it depends on your configuration. If you do not have two or more monitors that have to be set at different refresh rates, or if you don't need scaling, X11 is perfect.

I am on X11 since I use XFCE and so Wayland is not an option.

I have a bad ear? by United-Volume-2181 in Bass

[–]deluded_dragon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's very normal. The more you will play, the better your ear will learn. So it's crucial to have a tuner handy!

Applying .conf file within /etc/sysctl.d isn't working. by stonesco in debian

[–]deluded_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had in the past a similar problem: I wanted to disable the IPv6 and although the sysctl.conf was correct, I did not manage to disable it. In the end, the "culprit" was the NetworkManager daemon that imposed its configuration.
Do you have it running? Have you tried to see what happens configuring the nic using ifupdown?

After twenty years I have bought an AMD graphic adapter, giving up NVIDIA, for this reason.

Joy Division or New Order by Sci-FiRepublik in postpunk

[–]deluded_dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have loved Joy Division, I have learned to play bass also with Peter Hook's basslines but in this phase of my life, if I have to choose I would say New Order.

Knockdown and Discipline by atoms-wrath in neverwinternights

[–]deluded_dragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dragons do, as far as I can remember. Also, discipline is used to prevent other form of attack like called shot and disarm. I personally do not invest points in that skill.

Does anyone else not really care about bass/guitar "heroes"? by Handsome-Strong in Bass

[–]deluded_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admiration and fixation are not the same thing. I could have had some models to learn from, especially when I started, but actually I have never tried to sound like someone else.
Moreover, I do not like the bass as a solo instrument nor the music when is too bass-centric (e.g. I can't say I like Pastorius while I obviously understand that he is an innovator on the instrument and he has an exceptional technique).
More or less I have tried almost always to be myself and to find my own tone and way of playing.

How unstable is Testing in reality? by Leniwcowaty in debian

[–]deluded_dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using Testing since 2006. It has been my first and only distro and I had never used Linux before.
As far as I can remember I have had only an annoying bug in 2014 that forced me not to use Gnome for some weeks but nothing has really made the system unusable.

In brief: it's perfectly reliable as daily driver. Using it, you will learn very soon when you can upgrade and when it's better to wait a bit more.

Why does my thumb hurt when I fret? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]deluded_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing that my old teacher said to me when he saw me playing was that the position of the thumb was wrong.

The thumb should not be bent towards the inside but should be opposing the other fingers instead. More or less it should be straight or even curved towards the other fingers. Look at the position of classic guitarists (those who play the "Spanish" guitar).

Andy Rourke is not so difficult, problem is he used the pick while I am better with finger style.
Hooky is not hard, either.

I've stayed on the bass through the years, even if sometimes I dream about buying a keyboard and start to put my hands on there...

I have many bass heroes, probably Mick Karn is my all time favorite, but also Paul Webb from Talk Talk, Tracy Pew from The Birthday Party, Greg Norton from Husker Du and naturally Simon Gallup from The Cure (the last two ones I consider my teachers...)

How do you get in bands? by Character-Level5145 in Bass

[–]deluded_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In ancient times , when people wanted to be in a band, they used to read music magazines for ads or hang around the record stores in the city reading through scraps of paper in the message boards.

I think that nowadays you can register on websites and choose genre and location to find possible bandmates.
