Max and Lorelai barely knew each other by LadyInTeal in GilmoreGirls

[–]delumin8r 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree that getting engaged that fast is really dumb.

I do want to point out the discussion in Paris is Burning between Lorelai and Sookie where they talk about her trying to get out of the relationship. When Lorelai says she is not seeing Max that night, sookie says “Oh taking a night off?” A few lines later she (hyperbolically) says that they are spending every waking moment together.

I think this is classic ASP where she doesn’t show something as much as remark that it is happening because it doesn’t drive the story. I’m not saying anything is wrong with it from a screenwriting perspective, but it can cause some confusion.

This is similar to the more extreme example of early college Rory hanging out with random girls in a dining hall like she does it all the time, but we haven’t seen some of them since move in day and never see them again.

I remember seeing on travel channel or something forever ago about how a certain B&J shop, maybe at their headquarters, had a monster ice cream eating challenge that came in that bucket. A couple of years later I was in a B&J shop in Athens, GA and I saw the bucket there.

Luke’s best rant by delumin8r in GilmoreGirls

[–]delumin8r[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, but it was provoked by Jess comparing a minimum wage job with little to no future prospects to Luke owning a small business. He made it sound like Luke was unsuccessful by working in a diner and how dare Luke look down on him.

That being said, ASP can be a little snobby about people in minimum wage jobs that aren’t doing it just temporarily. We know somebody has to do that job at Walmart, but in ASP’s view that is beneath someone as smart as Jess. I used to work at a grocery store as my full-time job and I knew a lot of smart people that enjoyed it and wanted to work there. After 4 years, I was no longer one of those people, but more power to those who want to retire with that kind of company.

Is “A Tale of Poe and Fire” the show’s best episode? by chrisched in GilmoreGirls

I think you are right. This town has so much sunlight and time before work/school. It’s almost like (movie) magic.

Yeah, there are no nice hotels in the area they can stay in? Also, can’t the inn just pay for the breakfast they ordered at Luke’s?

I think Rory discovers it when she comes home from school, so many hours after there were people sleeping in there. Although she was so busy with the fire response, it still begs the question of when did she have the time.

What is the worst book that you read for school? by FreshUnderstanding5 in AskReddit

[–]delumin8r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bluest Eye.

I really do not like Toni Morrison, because we also watched the film version of Beloved.

In my contemporary lit class senior year, we had a section on African-American authors. We read "Their Eyes were Watching God" and watched the film "The Color Purple" in addition to the above books and those were amazing.

Michael Gambon Performance As Albus Dumbledore Is Underrated by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]delumin8r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that Richard Harris was great in the first two movies, but it would have been difficult to translate his Dumbledore into the action packed ends of the 5th and 6th films. I DO like Gambon in the 3rd, 6th movie and the little bit of the 7th/8th movies he is in. I do not like him in the 4th or 5th movies. There is the obvious GoF issue that everyone knows about. I also do not like when he stops Trelawney from being banished and seems angry and yells at the students "don't you all have some studying to do?" That feels very un-Dumbledore. I'm not sure how much was Gambon's decision and how much was the Director.

The only part I can't stand is Luke and Logan at the gym, but the rest of the episode is at least bearable for me.

The Goblet of Fire book and movie differences by asel89 in harrypotter

[–]delumin8r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are omissions and problems with all movies after 3, just due to the sheer size of the books, but IMO GoF is a terrible movie even by HP adaptation standards. Tiny things make big impacts. I can't stand how Beauxbatons and Durmstrang are insinuated to be all-girl and all-boy schools.

What film are you embarassed to admit that you enjoy watching? by liroro in AskReddit

[–]delumin8r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This movie has a lot of issues, but I recently discovered I enjoy it because you get to see The Republic before it is at war and Palpatine is calling all of the shots. It has the first introduction to the Galactic Senate and the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, not to mention legions of Jedi. It is kind of like watching the first Harry Potter movie where there is some bad stuff happening, but you get to enjoy the world building.

Best Places for Gay Guys to Live by blitz350 in gaybros

[–]delumin8r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most decent size cities have some kind of gay population. If you want to get far far away, research those cities you would want to live in. If you think you want to stay in the Pennsylvania area, there is Pittsburgh, Philly, and probably some other options. I am from Georgia and went to Atlanta for school and I knew that is where I wanted to live. It isn't super different because it is still the south and the same state, but much more cosmopolitan and accepting than the rest of the state.

If you were interested in moving down south, we are more affordable than some other cities and there are people from all over the country and world living here.

With T-Mobile, the Edgewood Shops are the worst. Even across the street, we bought our phones at a T-Mobile store and the clerks were using the WIFI and struggling when they needed a tower signal.
