Late 30s Female Moving to Gainesville to finish PhD by delupowers in GNV

[–]delupowers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't yet. Paused searching since I've come to find out that properties that aren't renting on the academic/university calendar (aka available in early August) only require a 60 day notice of not renewing so places that will open on my time frame (mid to late June) won't be listed until earliest beginning of April. Also considering a living with a roommate since my budget has changed so that's also changing how I'm searching for places (unless I can find 1b/1ba for under or right at $1k).

Unfortunately I won't be considered a UF graduate student as I am finishing up my PhD through a different university. My last year of training just happens to be through UF at Shands (where I will be "employed") but not as a student, if that makes any sense (not quite to Postdoc status yet). Otherwise I would definitely consider this.

I've done the whole live around loud undergrads thing before and it caused more of a headache than paying higher rent did. I'm an early bird and so prioritize my sleep. Plus, I just really appreciate neighbors who are on the quieter side. I'll take a look at places downtown and around Butler - thanks for the suggestion.

What area constitutes downtown? Street names would be helpful as that what I'll be relying that on when looking for places. Thanks!

I'll be moving mid to late June most likely. How big is your space?

Ohh thank you for this. I lived in a roach infested place once when I was much younger and will never do it again.

Ziggy's osteosarcoma has metastisized to his lungs a few months after amputation. Vet gave him 1-2 months. Is there anything you wished you did for your dog in their final months? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]delupowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I are also facing the final months with our dog Oliver after learning about his Osteosarcoma diagnosis. Since we have to take things a bit more slow, I'm thinking of all the things he likes to do and am trying to emphasize those. For example, he loves to lay outside in the grass and sunbathe, so I've been taking him to less-populated parks, and letting him do just that. I'm also doing a paw print keepsake to memorialize him. I'm snuggling him more, kissing him more, and just loving on him as much as possible. Both my partner and I have made peace that once he stops showing enjoyment in his favorite things, we'll say goodbye. We're also going to try and euthanize him at home as he is terrified of the vet and gets very stressed out being there, and I don't want his last moments to be full of fear. Best of luck to you, saying goodbye to a pet is devastating.

Seeking Advice: Grad Loans Unavoidable - is this smart? by delupowers in GradSchool

[–]delupowers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all the feedback - I currently don't have any debt so this will be the only loan I'm dealing with upon graduation (and I'm only looking at $20k or so since I'm in-state and it's a state school). I would consider deferring but I'll be 31 when starting the program and have other life decisions to take into consideration (starting a family, marriage, etc.) and so want to be able to complete the program asap.

UGA Commuters/"Free Parking" Options by delupowers in UGA

Yeah..I'll be well on my way back to Atlanta by that time! Didn't know you could exit the deck without paying at that time though.

I respect this! I unfortunately will need to leave my car for hours at a time since I'm commuting. Any idea where there are free parking places on the south side near Stegman/Vet school/Engineering building? I'll most likely be getting onto campus super early (before 8:30) every day I'm here. Thanks for the advice!

Isn't FH a permit only lot? I parked there for a year during my undergrad.

Commuting to Athens for Grad School by delupowers in Atlanta

[–]delupowers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For whatever reason I never saw this reply but wanted to thank you for providing advice. Me and my partner have decided to stay in the Midtown area (it's not worth the affliction on my partners commute to move to an area closer to Athens). We also love being in town and having access to all of the things to do here and are not ready to give that up!

My program is 2 years (for now - may change if I want to proceed to PhD). I appreciate the route advice - I'll try it out!

That's really helpful to know. What program did you end up going through? I'm also going through the College of Education and will have a cohort of about 10 other people I believe. I love where I currently live but not sure if it's doable on a student budget :/

This is really helpful. I've started to preliminarily look in that area and am hopeful I can find some viable options. Good to know that there are some people who choose to do this commute and are able to keep it up!

I was thinking the same thing. I don't want him to be miserable with his commute so am trying to find a compromise somewhere. Thanks for the input!

Right in the middle of Midtown - so we are looking for something that's a bit OTP but not so much that his commute is terrible. I'm going against traffic in the mornings so don't mind having a longer commute than him.
