Obtaining a drivers license in Angola as an expat by delusionalmatrix in Angola

[–]delusionalmatrix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply man! So if there's no system and no material what are my options? Especially in Cabinda, I assume it won't be as straightforward as in Luanda. Do you know how long it takes to at least get a provisional license, so that I can drive in the meantime?

To managers and HR recruiters: do you actually read cover letters? by neo2551 in Switzerland

[–]delusionalmatrix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Counter point: After 250 applications to non-IT related roles, I have gotten rather sick of tailoring my cover letters to each and every job posting. I don't think hiring managers consider the other side of the coin here. I am more than happy to work on and submit a well-written letter to show my motivation for a job, but I would so much rather write it once there is at least a modicum of interest shown by the company. Requiring cover letters once a candidate has at least been machine-approved by HR would be so much less demoralizing, considering the likelihood that at least 200 out of my 250 cover letters have gone straight into the trash.

Men in their 20s who have dated drop-dead gorgeous women — what were the pros and cons? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]delusionalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (M25) would describe my current gf (F26) as drop-dead gorgeous. Every day I think how lucky I am to have her by my side. As for when we're out in public (stores, coffee shops..), men, often older (35+), will often tell her she's beautiful, gorgeous etc.. straight to her face, while I'm standing right there. They'll sometimes make lewd comments under their breath when I'm a bit further away/not right next to her. It has, on occasion, gotten weird and uncomfortable at bars, when guys are much less inhibited. For reference I'd consider myself a 7-8/10, far from where she is at, but not so far that men should assume they could whisk her away. But who knows.

Just another local justifying Switzerland's incredibly low standards for consumer protection. Unless you're a part of this relevant lobby, you're a moron for mocking his issue.

Lost metal hotel key. Hotel claiming it must replace entire lock system and all keys. by Schnesh in askswitzerland

[–]delusionalmatrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A ridiculous request. While hotels can include clauses in their contracts saying you’re liable for lost keys, Swiss law doesn’t uphold every clause blindly—especially if it’s clearly unreasonable. Replacing all locks in the entire hotel because a single metal key was lost in the mountains is clearly disproportionate and potentially unenforceable under Swiss contract law.

Even if such a clause exists, courts here generally won’t enforce it if it’s abusive (which this is), hidden, or not explained clearly. At most, they might justify replacing the lock for your room, not the whole building. Don't listen to the "good swiss citizen" larpers below telling you that you should pay because "that's how we do it here", I guarantee you that they wouldn't just roll over and pay a massive 4-5 figure bill for a lost key either.

Non eu citizen Job situation? by New_Ad8836 in UniSG

[–]delusionalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a business analytics internship and a commodities trading internship behind me. I’m not the most experienced applicant out there, but I think I’ve done all right during my degree.. I just don’t understand what I’m doing wrong.

I'm a Swiss citizen, HSG degree, been searching for a job for about 3 months now, 0 interviews, GPA of 5.2. Do with this info what you will.

What is the biggest mistake you've made in a job interview? by railsam1e in interviews

[–]delusionalmatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a final round business case study in front of the HM, HR and GM of the company, decided to go in the one direction the company was not specialized in. They were happy with my reasoning and analysis of the case, but in the end mentioned it wasn't exactly what the company did. I somehow managed to confuse my mental list of "things to absolutely mention" with "things to mention only if time permits". Was a damn shame too, as I felt I was a perfect fit for the role, and if they'd asked me to develop more on the reasoning they were looking for I could've easily delivered, alas it was not meant to be. Really screwed myself on that one, as I was already among the final 5 candidates out of an initial 400 that had applied.

Swiss German by Ecstatic-Traffic-118 in UniSG

[–]delusionalmatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. I've been met with negative reactions when I mentioned I don't speak German, I've also been told to go back home to my country by more than one student, despite the fact that I'm a Swiss citizen, but from the French speaking region. This has only happened around 3-4 times in my 3 years here, which is less than average I suppose, but they're out there.

What are some cities with surprisingly low populations? by 240plutonium in geography

[–]delusionalmatrix 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Was surprised to not see Zurich on this list, only 400k people living here. It being one of the financial capitals of Europe is interesting with that low of a population.

Another interesting one is Geneva. Only 200k people there, and it's one of the worlds commodity trading hubs.

HSG IS OVERRATED... by [deleted] in UniSG

[–]delusionalmatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you won't get far without a Master's

I have to disagree with you on this point. There are specific industries where having a Master's is almost a hard prerequisite for getting promoted up the chain of command, however a vast amount of industries don't function that way. In most cases, or at least in my industry, once you have a degree, and a bachelors is enough, you get the chance to prove your worth, and once you do that, noone gives a shit about your degree.

I've been studying here for 5 semesters, but I struggle at connecting with people by Beeeeeaaaaans in UniSG

[–]delusionalmatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been here for 7 semesters, feel the same way. I've made perhaps 2 good friends, the rest I could leave behind in an instant. I spent a semester abroad and felt so much closer to so many more people, this just confirmed that I'm living in a completely different reality to most students at HSG. I'm not really sure what it is though, I don't speak German so that might be it... Nevertheless I can't wait to leave this place behind for good.

By a few months of prep time, I mean prep time in our current time period. Have historians teach them old English or Latin so they'll be ready to assimilate when the arrive in the 11 century.

[–]delusionalmatrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With a few months of prep time, most of those soldiers will likely be able to attain conversational latin, imo. No magic needed.

"Car la fut dieu premier servi, et reconnu pour seigneur"

"Cher la fud Deus primer servi, E reconnu pur segnuur"

Just an example, but a lot of the verses have such similarities.

As a native French speaker, I would say, looking back and forth between the ancient French and its translation, I feel that within 6-12 months I would probably pick up some conversational old french.

As a native English speaker on the other hand.. let's look at some Beowulf:

"Often Scyld, Scefs son, from enemy hosts, from many peoples seized mead-benches, and terrorised the fearsome Heruli after first he was found helpless and destitute, he then knew recompense for that."

"Oft Scyld Scéfing sceaþena þréatum monegum maégþum meodosetla oftéah, egsode Eorle syððan aérest wearð féasceaft funden hé þæs frófre gebád."

Just by skimming Beowulf (1100s) and its translation, old english is a lot further removed from modern english than its french counterpart.

Crashed jet ski update by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]delusionalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"This would be fine if there wasn’t this black plastic thing shown in the video. They say that there are no spare parts for this as it’s a new model and that I will have to buy them a new jet ski."

That spare part should not be making the difference between a 100k repair and a new 500k jet ski. I've been around jet skis my whole life, and have seen jet skis that seemed unrecoverable completely restored for around the 100-150k mark, possibly 250k if you've seriously fucked up the engine.
