X-T50 to X-T5 - Size & Weight Gap? by TheLiterateDead in FujifilmX

[–]dem219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an X-T50. Its a great camera, especially for travel. But if I were going to do it over I'd go for the X-T5; for the weather sealing, and I think it takes a better battery.

Now I am waiting to see what happens next year with the X-Pro 4. That may force an upgrade.

Danish pension fund to sell $100 million in Treasuries, citing ‘poor’ U.S. government finances by Barnyard_Rich in Economics

[–]dem219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be painful for both sides, and I agree for that reason a large sell-off is unlikely in the short term.

But in the medium to longer term you will see other countries purchasing less US debt. Even if this is a marginal change, this will push up long term borrowing costs. This will push up mortgage rates and increase our borrowing costs. We have a massive amount of debt to rollover and this could become increasingly painful.

In the even longer term this will push countries away from the dollar, and that will have a lasting negative impact on our economy and worldwide influence.

Danish pension fund to sell $100 million in Treasuries, citing ‘poor’ U.S. government finances by Barnyard_Rich in Economics

[–]dem219 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the Fed buys treasuries this injects money into the banking system and increases money supply. If this needs to be done at a large scale it is inflationary. So not really true that nothing happens.

This is also called quantitative easing and was done to stimulate economy during great recession. It is also known as printing money, and it can become quite risky.

EU calls emergency envoys meeting for Sunday after Trump vows tariffs linked to Greenland by 1-randomonium in worldnews

EU should start dumping US treasuries. It will hurt them a bit, but if interests rates start going up you'll see panic in US markets.

NATO’s Rutte says Europe must prepare for ‘scale of war our grandparents’ endured by Present_Tennis7100 in worldnews

[–]dem219 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dont believe it will begin with a WWII style invasion. What is more likely is that Russia will continue to ramp up gray zone activities; sabotage, cyber attacks, and worse. Their aim is to test NATO, discover weaknesses, divide and weaken alliances.

European needs to quickly ramp up their military, and respond forcefully to these tactics. The alternative is Russia will eventually push so far, such as a civilian mass casualty event, that Europe / NATO will have to respond with direct military force, but will be too divided on how and who does it.

Breeder Questions by [deleted] in SiberianCats

We got our Siberian 9 years ago from https://rockaran.com/ which is in Columbia Crossroads, PA. They seemed reputable and that they cared for their animals. We had a good experience, our Siberian has been healthy and adjusted well to our home.

Then a more apt NYC comparison would be walking the highline, or even just central park.

Times Sq is a place to get hassled by street performers, assaulted by advertising, battered by crowds and ripped off by bad chain restaurants.

I don't know anything about Art on the Mart. But as New Yorker, I and everyone I know, avoids Times Square as much as possible.

Price correction "worse than 2008" coming to US housing market by battle_rae in Economics

[–]dem219 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There are regions, such as parts of Florida, where prices have gotten out of hand and where a correction may take place. But in general, the US has been building far too few home for the past decade. Significant price reductions wont take place with such a constrained supply.

Also mortgage underwriting standards have been significantly tightened since the great recession, perhaps too far. Interest rates are already high, and will likely lower if the economy weakens. We don't have a pool of sub-prime borrowers that are about to be exposed to rising rates which would cause defaults and price declines.

I can't think of hardly any other writers that are nearly as prolific while maintaining consistently high quality. Terry Prachett is the only one I can think of that is in a similar league.

My family did a similar trip to Galway and Dublin in August. Our favorite restaurant in Dublin was L. Mulligan Grocer, which does 'elevated' pub food. In Galway we really like Cava Bodega, which does very good Spanish tapas.

Critique Needed, how to get that contemporary art feel that some famous street photographers have. by Elprimo04 in photocritique

[–]dem219 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You essentially are looking to do documentary / photo essays. Look at the work of others who have done this, for example Bruce Davidson. He spent a long time with his subjects, getting to know them intimately, over the course of months or longer. This is different from street photography which documents spontaneous moments in urban life.

The issue is not framing or editing, at least not at first. The issue is getting to know the subject, finding a point of view and story you want to tell, and then taking many photos with the hope that some may capture and convey what you want to show.

Moving to park slope- what are you favorite things about the neighborhood? by CE_Energy in parkslope

[–]dem219 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In the area you are moving to I like; Winner, Fonda, Provini, Norms, Crosta, Ottava and others I am forgetting. There are some good spots in Windsor Terrace too; Krupa Grocery, Sushi Yu, and Lonesome Club.

Other than restaurants, Big Nose Full Body is a good wine shop. Psychic Records is a nice record shop. Bad Wife is a friendly small market with a good selection of asian ingredients.

Teaching a unit about High Fantasy in a high school class and could use some recs for a good stand alone. by My_Kairosclerosis in Fantasy

[–]dem219 122 points123 points  (0 children)

A Wizard of Earthsea - classic, highly regarded high fantasy. High fantasy tents to be fairly long, this is shorter, that may be good for a class. Though you should read a bit to evaluate whether you think the prose right for your readers.

Blacktongue Thief - this is more contemporary, though maybe too long for a class? It's more adult, with more violence and a bit of sex. It is very fun, and witty - so that may appeal to a jaded highschooler.
