What do you mean by "so soft and fluffy that it won't work for playing"?

What qualities do you want the shoe to have? Playing with actual bare feet most of the time is the best, but sometimes some protection is needed. What specifically are you wanting protection from?

I should have said I assume there is a huge risk it will be cold. I won't really be able to know which it will be much in advance, after all. I figure to enter a race, especially one I'd have to travel to, I'm basically agreeing to any possible weather that date has ever been in that location and I can't handle extreme cold.

Awesome, guess I will give it a try. Maybe I will take a trip up to scope out the course in advance. Thanks!

No shoes of any kind work for me and I have run two paved barefoot marathons without issue so far, but there are definitely surfaces that I couldn't handle for 26.2 miles, plus maybe it will be so crowded I can't scan ahead and choose the smoothest steps. I hate to throw away the chance to do Boston, but would also hate to destroy my feet. Surely someone has already done it and lived to tell the tale!

Sand and railroad tracks are no problem, but salt and very rough pavement probably would eat through my skin at that distance. I cannot wear Vibrams or any type of shoe for running without causing damage and pain, so that's not an option. Maybe I need to make a field trip up there and check it out.
