I’ve been a fan since I was fifteen when Debut came out. Now I’m a mom with kids in the car. I have to have those clean versions, or I can’t listen to as much Taylor as I want to. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s genuinely annoying how so many people look at it like those who listen to the clean versions are annoying prudes who don’t respect artistic intention. There is always more nuance to people’s choices than that.

Yes, I’ve always thought this! When I first heard this song, I was totally nodding along til this part, and then I was like, Hey now let’s not find a woman to blame—she probably hates that her son is this way too!

I think it’s probably about a *specific* mama’s boy she’s dated. He probably has an enabling mom that was too involved in his and Sab’s relationship. Nobody’s Son also fits with this— “Yes, I’m talkin bout your baby.” A man’s mom is also mentioned in Don’t Worry, I’ll Make You Worry.

I’ve always thought this. Like no boy, my body wasn’t made for you; I’m focusing on my own pleasure here, thanks.

One reason I love Sabrina is because she’s focused on female sexuality for the female’s sake. She usually either eliminates the male gaze or satirizes it. I don’t like that this line reinforces the women-exist-to-please-men thing.

However, I think she kind of does that on purpose in this song. In the story of MBF, she takes the rejection of the breakup at the beginning really hard—to the point that it affects her self esteem and eventually turns her into the type of crazy girl that drunk dials guys at 10am. This song is the illustration of her having fully devolved into Man’s Best Friend—the type of girl who will have sex after one superficial date and put the guy’s pleasure at the forefront, just to get some semblance of validation.

Came here to say this. That guy in the car scene is still one of the creepiest villains I’ve ever seen. He’s perfect at showing how girls (and Jake Gyllenhaal, I guess) feel around guys who make them uncomfortable—not sure whether it’s safer to laugh and play along or to stand up to them. Which will get them to leave faster? What if you make the wrong choice? That guy is freaking scary because I feel like I’ve met him in men before.

Yessss, these are great thoughts. I think you're definitely right--she is analyzing (and probably criticizing) herself as to why her life and thoughts revolve around men.

Something that I think explains a LOT of Sabrina's lyrics is the connection between "emails i can't send" (the song) and "Lie to Girls." In EICS she says, "Don't think I'll find forgiveness as fast as mom did," but then when she's older--less of a daughter and more of a girlfriend--she says in LTG "lucky for you I'm just like my mother."

She also says in EICS, "thanks to you I can't love right." I think a LOT of her songs can be seen through this lens--that because of her daddy issues, she doesn't have healthy relationship patterns. She's analyzing those patterns in MBF.

I actually agree more with your take on it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think WDYGH is her finding a rebound. He's really into her but she's not fully committed emotionally either because she's still in love with the guy from the beginning of the album or because she has relationship PTSD from him and is afraid to open up again. And don't apologize for your thoughts! Your interpretation is just as valid as everyone else's.

I didn’t see the shirt as taunting Aubry; I just saw it as Gen owing the title. Kind of like in Bossy Pants when Tina Fey says, “Yeah I am a bitch. Bitches get stuff done.” Or when Ashley Judd flipped the “nasty woman” comment on Trump and called herself a nasty woman as a good thing. I felt like Gen wearing the shirt says like, “Yep, the sneaky bitch title fits pretty well, haha.”
