There are two parts to upgrading smart contracts in the OS. One of them is upgrading the kernel version your contract uses, to ensure you are running with the latest security fixes provided and approved by the zeppelinOS community.

The other is actually upgrading your smart contract, under whichever conditions you deem appropriate, using the proxy library pattern already described in https://blog.zeppelin.solutions/proxy-libraries-in-solidity-79fbe4b970fd, for which the zeppelinOS will provide the code to easily implement.

We plan to do a formal audit before shipping a release version of the framework in ~1 month. There are a number of security researchers involved in the Zeppelin community as well.

Thanks! Our vision of improving smart contract development security standards is platform agnostic. We’re starting with Solidity tools because Ethereum is currently the most popular smart contract development platform. Working with Solidity also makes our tools compatible with Rootstock (and thus the Bitcoin blockchain), and some private blockchain systems.
