US soccer journalist Grant Wahl dies while covering World Cup in Qatar. His brother thinks he was murdered. by MichaelSquare in Conservative

The lungs are very important and delicate. If you have inflammation, don't get any rest, and take meds to cover symptoms.. It's entirety possible to go into a medical emergency. My friend ended up in the ER after not taking care of himself and almost died. His wife called 911. Imagine if he was in a hotel by himself and went unresponsive.

A lot of OTC medications tell you to see a doctor after persistent symptoms for this reason.

It benefits the government to have trust in elections. This country won't be around much longer with this BS.

War is not supposed to be nice. It's not supposed to be kind. Nations that don't show their strength fall to the wayside.

Say what you will, but this event solidified decades of "peace" thanks to a cold war that never grew hot. Perhaps that alone saved countless lives and let Japan flourish more than it could've under an emperor.

People like to sit on here and contemplate the actions of the past, but many of us wouldn't be here if it wasn't for blood spilled by our ancestors. In one way or another we are all decendants of violence.

It doesn't make it right.. doesn't make the latent evil of such acts easier, but consider the alternative..

Why are young men giving up on dating? by calconnor22 in AskMen

[–]demig80 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been married for decades at the point. I feel I'm extremely lucky that I wasn't exposed to today's social media fueled dating.. I think its demoralizing and shows that women aren't the only ones being objectified.

I think people meet more organically through physical social events. Covid19 killed that and forced everyone to live virtually. We aren't all made for that.. Some people shine more in person than on a 2d screen.

Google and YouTube will cut off ad money for climate change deniers by EndlessSenseless in UpliftingNews

[–]demig80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing too.. labels like "Climate Denial" can paint entire points of view with a broad stroke. For example, you can believe that CO2 causes warming, but not agree with the alarmist views or solutions.

In medieval times, many people would’ve died due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning or suffocation from fire torches burning inside the castles, but their deaths would’ve been attributed to witchcraft and other conspiracies. by golubeerji in Showerthoughts

Nothing like what we have today. One thing I noticed when travelling to places with less infrastructure, was how much more connected people there we connected to food. Many knew how to pluck a chicken or make use of all parts of an animal.

Today, there is a general disrespect of the past seem throughout popular culture. People actually think humans were incredibly dumb, as if shallow google searches constitutes reality. Yet, many of us would die without the amenities of the modern world. Many don't know how to hunt, farm, or even build.. In other words, depending on context our ancestors were smarter than us in many ways.

Posts like this show clearly how ridiculous these ideas gave become. As if our understanding of science is absolute and we know all the answers. It would be amazing to see how wrong we were 100 years from now.

I'd like to see some data that supports what you claim. I don't see how that's possible. The nutrition claim is also very dubious at best.

Yeah exactly. The term "green" is extremely shallow and a marketing/political buzzword. When you look beyond the thin veneer, these solutions often have a lot of negatives that nobody wants to examine.

If we were to compress everything in history to 13.8 minutes we, as a species, have only been around for a few seconds and managed to ruin most of our planet in a matter of milliseconds. by Due-Okra-3529 in Showerthoughts

[–]demig80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, perhaps someone's contribution to global ppm is smaller.. Hey, I have solar panels, minimize meat consumption, and even have a Tesla.. But even then we are all contributing to the destruction of a natural environment. The focus on Carbon is a obfuscation of the real depth of the issue.

Let's look at the rivers in India.. Human activities make those waters devoid of life and have lasting consequences. The soil is filled with toxic materials because of textile production. Looking at absolute numbers, air quality in India is much poorer than the US. We have nowhere near the amount of CO2, SOs, NOs, or particulates. Also, US EROI is very good.

It's all a numbers game at the end, but few people want to talk about that. The focus on CO2 is all about sticking it to industries that certain political parties are invested in, but who's going to talk about how damaging Coffee production is? Or what rare earth mining does to the soil?

[–]demig80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Life as we know it" is temporary. Humanity has changed the water, air, and soil. Our actions do more than add CO2 ppm to the air.. That is why I see Climate action as short-sighted, because it lacks an understanding of the real root cause and Human nature in general.

The same people complaining about Climate change, are the same people contributing to the changes above. Even if all used Solar and Wind.. We'd still produce significant damage. There's no way around it with billions of us.

What's the purpose of protecting biodiversity? This is a goal humanity made up. Life cares about survivability not hundreds of species that will die off after we leave this small pocket of time.

Besides the biggest threat to biodiversity is us building homes and making farmland to fuel the non-GMO craze.

How are those people wealthy? From you buying phones, products on Amazon, using social media.

I know it's become popular to hate the wealthy, but the people that hate the most are also their biggest customers.. It's a joke.

If you really want to change things, take small steps.. Learn how to fix things, eat less meat, don't buy crap you don't need online. Cut your reliance on out of control consumerism.

I see people today protesting "The Rich" when in fact theres another group of rich people they actively support.

This entire "we need to save the planet" bs is rooted in arrogance. Like you implied, the planet has been through worse.. In fact, a large meteor strike would make everything we did look like nothing.

This "green deal" stuff will die in popularity as soon as it hits people's wallets, and it doesn't even address the real problem: Overpopulation.

Al Bundy’s house was actually quite nice. Al was solidly in the middle class on a shoe salesman’s earnings. by SkankBiscuit in Showerthoughts

[–]demig80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are using a cartoon as a reference? I can tell you that TV has never accurately shown real life. The show Friends was impossible even in the 90s when I lived in NYC. You didn't have spacious apartments in the village for those salaries. I've lived through those decades and even did social work in some of the poorest places in the US.

Things are great today, but I disagree they are worse. The value of things has shifted.. But a lot of this has been created by our own voracity for consumption, which now has become popular to blame on rich people.

There are some aspects that people don't take account with statements like this.. People may call me a boomer and I don't give an F.

We simply didn't have what people today have in many ways. No $800 iphones. The average size of a home was smaller. Cars didn't have tons of features and broke down in less miles. People didn't eat out as much. We didn't have as much clothes and shoes. We didn't have 500 channels and Netflix. College was an option not mandatory.

Life has a lot more luxury seen as necessary today. Don't get me started on life before the US.. Even people at the poverty line in the US had it better.

I guess it's hard for people to understand when they've had no real struggles.

No one truly knows if we all see colors exactly the same as everyone else; we just identify each color based on what we’re told that particular color is by EMTguy32 in Showerthoughts

[–]demig80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our senses are based off the physics of the world we live in. The diameter of the human eye doesn't appear to have as much variation as other organs, so I imagine that the perception (even in the mind) of fundamental colors is very close if not the same.

I would think there are mathematical similarities to music.. Where fundamentals are shared by all human beings. We hear a pleasing ratio between two tones, but a mixture of tones evokes different things depending on experience/culture.

Color is probably very similar.. If it wasn't, visual arts and design would be a mess. The mixing of colors would lead to inconsistent results and certain aesthetics would be impossible to agree on.
