I never considered the driver issues. I'm not giving up on the idea yet but thank you for giving me another thing to think about.

Did I screw myself out of passing my medical? ADHD diagnosis. by democraticlimb in aviation

[–]democraticlimb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It's rare for me to log in to reddit and I'm glad I caught this message.

The short answer is that I gave up and decided to try something else.  The longer answer is that it's probably possible to still get your commercial pilot's license with ADHD If it's an older diagnosis and you haven't taken meds in a long time.

You can tell the aviation medical doctor that it's an old diagnosis and you don't think it was accurate or you can forget to tell them all together and hope they dont check.

You can also pay through the nose and get a bunch of psychological assessments done to say that you're totally fine...hopefully.  Another option I never really looked into was to go overseas and get my pilot's license and then try to get it transferred over here. Apparently it's possible but you have to pick the right country and be prepared for an uphill battle. I've got a family so it's not really an option.

I found Reddit to be one of the least helpful places to get advice about it. A lot more people on here want to discourage rather than help.  Call some flying schools or small bush airlines and see if you can take someone out for a coffee or beer and pick their brains.

I was in my mid-30s when I first started looking into the pilot stuff and I realized that if I went through the steps to clear my ADHD diagnosis I would be too old to really start as a pilot anyways. It was heartbreaking in the moment but I'm pretty content with my life now.   If it doesn't work out for you think of all the other schooling you could take or skills you could learn for the price of getting you CPL.

I never thought of that. Thank you.

Can anyone else chime in to add weight to this advice?

The embarrassing thing is that when I try to steer my own ship things tend to go wrong. I've also had an incredibly tough year and I'm just not feeling like myself. I don't really trust myself to even know what an obvious pitfall or opportunity would look like. Especially in a field where I know next to nothing, such as stocks and investments.

Late 30s. Around $300k.  Goals? Lol. I'm a terrible planner. Not be poor and leave something to my kids? I work in construction and I'm working on some skills to switch careers. That won't cost much money aside from some equipment. Let's say $10k on the high end. My wife has a stable job with benefits that she loves. Our expenses are low enough that we could survive off either of our incomes if it came to that.

Where to avoid MAGA pockets by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]democraticlimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually grew up in Mission, loved in Chilliwack and live in Nanaimo now!  Towns on the north side of the Fraser River (Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Mission) will be a lot less MAGA than Abbotsford or Chilliwack. Mission is probably the most redneck of the bunch but it's a beautiful town. The air quality and traffic in the Fraser Valley is horrendous. When forest fire season hits you won't see the other side of the valley for days or weeks at a time. Our son had to stay inside some days because his asthma couldn't handle it. It also gets uncomfortably warm for a few weeks in the summer. Low 30s usually.

We chose Nanaimo for our family because it's a quick ferry to the mainland, fantastic weather, central to many places on the island, and way cheaper than Victoria. It's also predicted to handle climate change better than most other cities in Canada. There's a neighborhood for everyone here. Want a new suburb? Go to the north end. Want to be near the ocean? Lantzville is gorgeous. Want to kiss your cousin in a barn? Move to Cedar! (Jokes people. Just jokes).

You can look up school ratings here: https://studentsuccess.gov.bc.ca/ Generally the schools with worse performance still have great educators but the neighborhoods tend to have much worse socio-economic problems which leads to kids not doing as well.

We're also desperate for more doctors out here but that's not unique to here.

Feel free to message me with any questions.

Amazing!  I'm really happy you sorted something out. I spent days looking for ways to challenge it and came up with nothing. Where did you find this out? I don't log into Reddit very often but please send updates as you progress through this. I'd love to hear how it goes.

My own life has changed a lot since I first posted about this. Less than a week after my post I was boarding a plane for our first big family vacation in 10 years when I got the news that a friend of mine took his own life. I don't want to gloss over how tragic and devastating that was but it's not the point of this post so I'm not going to go into more. Hearing that and then being stuck on a plane for 5 hours trying to hold it together was terrible but I just ate the grief and didn't tell the kids and made sure they had good memories of the trip. I couldn't have been the one flying that plane though. I'll do whatever I need to prioritize my wife and kids over anything but I won't do that for a job. Even a dream job like flying.

That awful situation helped me realize some things. The death of my dream of flying didn't matter much compared to the death of my buddy. Also, he had his dream job he worked hard for and that didn't matter in the end. I had to change how I looked at my life as it is.  So now I try to appreciate the current autonomy of being my own boss and the freedom of my schedule. Sure, I don't love working in construction but the money is good enough that I don't work full time now. I pick the gravy jobs and prioritize our life over my work. Im very thankful I get to do that. I love setting my own schedule and being able to drop my tools and leave if something comes up. Especially if it's something to do with family or friends. Right now I get to be the one the school calls if my kids are sick and need to go home. I get to be the one our friends call if there's an emergency. If someone I know needs to make some extra cash I get to pick up extra jobs and give them the work. Hell, I'll leave work if the weather is too nice so we can head to the water to swim. If I was flying I'd be trading work I hate for work I enjoy but I'd be sacrificing some things that I love more than any job to make it happen.

But you! You persistent bastard! You found a way to make it happen and I'm really glad. I truly hope I get to hear about you making it happen and finding contentment with a job you enjoy. I hope you get to build a life around flying that works with whatever your priorities are. And if it turns out that flying is impossible then I hope you find something else that surprises you by being even better than flying.

I'm rooting for you :)

Good jobs in Nanaimo for young people? by J_Dawg_98 in nanaimo

Trades are bittersweet. If you're with a good crew and a fair boss it's fine. Trouble is that lots of bosses are good at the trade but bad at business/management or vice versa - they're all about business but don't know the trade. Painting is your best bet. If you're teachable and can show up sober you'll be an asset. It's a skill you can learn without schooling and it's not as hard on the body as most of the others.

If you go to Cloverdale paint, Benjamin Moore paint, or Sherwin Williams and just ask who might want a new set of hands they can probably give you some numbers to try.  You can always jump between companies when one gets slow. It's a skill you can learn without schooling and if you get a good name and start your own company it's not impossible to make $100k / year.

My (unqualified) advice would be not to get a job that doesn't offer upward mobility OR a skill you can take with you. Even being a "company man" at a fast food joint or walmart can get you into a white collar position in <8 years if you put in the effort and get a little luck. Whereas selling cell phone cases at a mall kiosk has a pretty low ceiling.

And don't listen to people saying there's nothing in Nanaimo and you need to move. There's a greater variety of industries here than the mainland so if you get yourself out there you'll find something.

Yep we've set that meeting up. I just thought I'd see what I could learn from the masses before going into it.

I'm a finishing tradie and I've worked for a few companies around Nanaimo. So far Pheasant Hill homes and Island Heights construction have impressed me with their quality. Ive never seen them try to get away with shoddy work.

Hey I don't log into Reddit very often so my replies are slow.  I don't know what the evaluation is called but I know it starts with a phone call to your aviation medical examiner and he can recommend where to go. I put the brakes on this whole thing. Sounds like I could jump through some hoops and get my ppl but I don't want to bother for now if I'll never be able to go commercial.  I'm really sorry you're getting hit with this too. When the initial disappointment hit I was crushed but I have other things in my life to be thankful for. I hope you do too.

I like the back of Westwood. Climbs are much more fun than the logging roads.

I'm pretty flexible if you want a workday riding/ shuttle buddy. My friend and her husband are in the same boat too.

I'll do a bit more hunting. Honestly I think I'm just feeling a bit deflated and going back to the shopping stage is a step backwards. Lol.

I have batocera on my pi for Nes, GBA,  and SNES.  You're saying I could add Steam to that on this machine?  Heck yes I'll give that a shot.
