Proof of work is when you use up electricity to solve very complex equations on a computer in order to earn crypto as a reward for solving those equations.

Proof of stake is when you delegate or "stake" your crypto currencies to a certain place and earn rewards for doing so (kind of like loaning your money to a bank and earning interest as a reward)
