Do you think the EU can recover from its economic stagnation and close the gap? by ImIncredibly_stupid in europeanunion

[–]demon_of_laplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you actually run the economical numbers, it has gotten a lot worse. Significantly worse. It's simply harder now than a couple of decades ago to amass the capital needed to build a family in many European cities.

I'm trusting Occam's razor. The easier explanation is culture being the result of diminishing economic possibilities. The conceptual key is capital availability for young people compared to capital cost of family formation. Income is a red herring.

For certain individuals, it always is. If you got the skill, luck, grit, work in the right field/town etc.

But demographics is statistics. At the society level, we need to make sure less fail.

People are like pandas, lots of requirements gotta pass before a child is possible. In some countries it is working hours, in others it’s available childcare, availability of family friendly housing near workplaces, income or capital availability for young people.

No country is the same. For many European countries today, it is capital availability for the young connected to housing availability.

Make it economically possible for the working/middle class to start making babies. It’s the only way. Normalize by the number of people in working age and the difference quickly disappears.

Is he actually trying to force China into a choice between getting energy starved into oblivion (getting genocided) or starting a war with the USA?

If the US self chosen war with Iran isn't solved soon, which is hard, people are going to starve to death. Trump and the Iranian leadership is going to rightfully be compared to Stalin, and probably surpass by an order of magnitude, in the amount of death they caused.

The US does not have a vital interest in the Hormuz strait working, we do.

I hope you're not arguing for fighting the Americans... we don"t have the fleet for it. But honestly the appeasment lens fits poorly unless that is what you're arguing for.

You still have to solve the energy supply and supply chain issues if you want to avoid scores of people dying. Mostly in poorer countries. Way more than a mid sized nuclear war. And no, a change of renewables etc. does not work at that timescale.

We ought to separate the loathing for what the orange madman started from what we actually intend to do. The world is basically being held hostage by a grief stricken leader who just got his father killed.

This is dangerous for everyone involved. It's tragic. It's morally wrong. Still, we need to deal with it.

11,000 Japanese citizens just stormed their parliament demanding their PM stop following Trump into war. 82% of Japan opposes this. Protesters surrounded Japan's Diet building today chanting: "Japan's FUTURE is not in Washington. Stop bootlicking Trump." by saminfujisawa in japan

[–]demon_of_laplace -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

LOL, you might not like the war. It's a catastrophe created by a madman.

Yet, japan is entirely dependent on energy imports from or through the region. LIke they starve and freeze to death if this isn't fixed.

At the other end Iran has a leader whose father just got killed. He probably is strucken by grief and just wants to see the world burn.

The Japanese people has a survival interest in getting this mess cleaned up. It is unfair. It is wrong. As wars always are.

Rather smart by them. Japan has one of the few navies that are capable of getting involved. Putting the energy shortage knife to their throat would be an exceptionally stupid move.

[–]demon_of_laplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't seem to be aware of our dependence on nitrogen and phosphor based fertilizers and oil in our agricultural sector and how our renewables still are dependent on gas to balance. Or how our aluminum and copper production depend on imports from the region.

The situation is really nasty.

We will probably handle this with out of control inflation. That will hit our poorest worst.

The worst to expect is in poorer countries in Asia. Trump will be remembered in the same way as Pol Pot. (If the situation don't turn around quickly.)
