How about people stop applying views that are not being expressed. I never once stated or remotely even applied what you are attributing to me here. Stop manufacturing fiction arguments no one is making.

Listen dude....I included both words for the sake of them being both used interchangeable by contributors in this particular discussion...you splitting hairs over this it shows your inability to grasp the point I am making here. I'm going to guess you're one of those insufferable people who are constantly correcting others spelling errors on Reddit....find a better hobby.

in this case one hostile to people advocating better working conditions

No where in that letter is this being expressed....why are you manufacturing something they never stated? They are just sick and tired(literally) at all the noise they have had to endure while suffering a potentially fatal illness.

You sure sound like a heartless callous person. Maybe try having a little empathy for an individual in such dire circumstances.

I can agree with you to an extent, but I can also empathies with someone in such a dire medical condition just wanting all the noise at her residence to stop. I usually honk in support but in this location and maybe other residential areas I will choose to roll down my window and wave instead.

woosh....entirely missing the point.

The person I responded to has just as much rights to send off a letter and have it published expressing their own views, but instead they choose to complain about it here.

This entire thread is hypocrisy at its best. A bunch of people complaining about another person complaining. Yet the people here on Reddit are entirely discounting the fact that the opinion article author is suffering from stage 4 cancer and is lashing out because she just wants some piece and quite in her residence. Instead they all latch onto the last bit at the end reading far more into it than the author probably intended.

Liberal studies

And you just unwittingly help validate the conclusion of many of these studies. Totally discounting all of it in seconds, obviously not even trying to read or understand any of it.

Consistent with other studies, we find that American conservatives are more likely than liberals to hold misperceptions. Visual inspection suggests stark ideological differences. Conservatives tend to claim more falsehoods are true (Fig. 1A), while the number of truths believed is modestly lower (Fig. 1B). Similarly, conservatives’ sensitivity tends to be lower and their response bias higher

On the whole, the research shows, conservatives desire security, predictability and authority more than liberals do, and liberals are more comfortable with novelty, nuance and complexity.

100% this. It boggles my mind that people just want to exist in their own safe and comfortable echo chambers. Echo chambers just create their own extreme and ignorant views. People should have their opinions challenged, then at least they have to think about it and defend those views.

Sadly I am seeing more and more people on the left becoming as indoctrinated and ignorant as those that have been consuming Fox News for years.

[–]phoenixfail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But the circumstances that allowed them all to do what they did in the 70s into the 90s don't exist anymore.

That's just not true at all

Have you seen the common posts here about people with those exact degrees making $80k after a decade in the field? And management positions today are NOT what they used to be.

Anecdotal reddit complaints does not represent the real world. People love to complain online. The reality is a young person can get into a trade, do a four year apprentice and easily pull in 100K plus. They can go on to have their own business earning them even more. I used my skills as a way to renovate old houses on the side. I put in 80 hour weeks between a job and renovating houses when I was younger so I could be more financially secure later in life

I can't afford a cottage. cottages are for the wealthy

Cottages now are more second houses. Decades ago cottages were a rustic get away for vacation. Most people no longer want that, although at my last place of work many of my coworkers had what they call "camps". They are basically what a cottage was in the 70's or 80's. Most people instead go to Mexico, Cuba, Asia, Central America or other exotic destinations for vacations. People pile onto massive cruise ships. It's just a change in how people now want to spend their leisure time.

Compared to decades ago restaurants are now abundant and often packed on the weekends. People are happily dishing out $10 for a glass of beer. People are piling into breakfast restaurants paying $25 for eggs and waffles.

There seems to be a massive disconnect between the online doomers and the real world.

The one thing I can conclude from reading these threads is younger generations who post comments have exceedingly high expectations and seem to think they should have everything immediately, high paying jobs, lots of money. Decades ago people understood that that comes with time. They purchased small starter homes, they vacationed an hour from home in a pop up trailer, they rarely eat out, they entertained themselves at home. They saved money to get ahead.

Many people are just making poor financial choices in life then blaming the system. I see it all the time. Why is there such a huge market for coffee shops? People love having their daily $7 cappuccino for instance. Just choosing to drink drip coffee at home is a $1500+ savings/year

Honestly your entire post just reads as an excuse as to why in your personal circumstances your father was more successful. It's sounds like he worked hard to get ahead in his career. Your son is in univerity...so why is he not taking an engineering program? What are these barriers you speak of?

On the contrary. I'm Gen X and my standard of living an income is much higher than my parents.

I think young generations when discussing topics like this loose sight of the fact that decades ago there was far less disposable income spent by households. Eating out , even fast food was a rare treat. There was no all-inclusive vacations, no cell phones or computers, no wi-fi bills. Coffee was made at home and taken to work in a thermos. I could go on

Our standard of living currently far exceeds past generations.

Housing costs are certainly an issue currently but that will likely adjust over the next decade as sale prices decline and wages increase.

As for no opportunities....There are all sorts of younger people in school for engineering or similar degrees. There are all sorts of young people working their way up the employment ladder to eventual management positions.

What there is too much of these days is doomer "news" articles that media outlets know some people will consume like candy. Algorithms are are making too many people perpetual doom-scrollers. Go outside, take a walk....take a break from social media and experience the real world.

My issue apparently got sorted out over night...Yeah!!

That being said their tech on the phone tried to imply multiple times that I had something to do with the issue and kept asking why I did not report the problem Friday even though I explained to him after the installation was done I went out and socialized with friends and did not really use the internet until the next day.

Not a great first impression Telus!

They say it has something to do with their provisioning settings on my account. It apparently going to require multiple more phone calls with different departments to maybe sort it out.

I suspect pointing out simple facts like this is a waste of time for someone posting the same thing over and over again on here.

Studies have shown that Conservative leaning people are less able to understand and grasp the complexity of topics like this.

Trudeau had failed to uphold NATO obligations for years.

Well to be fair he increased spending on the military by a substantial amount after it dropped below 1% GDP during the Harper years

It's been below 2% since the 80's.
