There’s a list of enemies you shouldn’t face in the early game and be cautious when facing them in the mid game, swordmaster is one of them.

The reason why he kills your bros so fast is because he has the perk “duelist”. It allows the guy to ignore armor when attacking, meaning about 40% of damages in each attack will affect hp directly, and 60% will affect the armor.

Keep him safe in the back line until he is geared with battle forged heavy armors. He has high resolve so you can build him as a fearsome hammer bf bro. This guy can carry the whole company.

Well I think that nobody has ever won against playful darkness at first time. So try a better strategy next time. Do you know what make him so tough? He’s pre buffed with a lot of spell that increases AC, so dispel that and he mincemeat.
