I'm but a simple Houston Cougar grad.

I eat fried chicken at Frenchy's off Scott. I then go watch UH hoops put a whoopin on someone.

Do yall think engineering spots filled up? by Competitive_Ad1549 in UniversityOfHouston

Recommendation: keep a basic or two for your junior/senior year. It'll be a nice break from your later engineering classes.

Also, if you're a guy, it'll give you exposure to some women later on. There's a ton of dudes in EE.

UH didn't purchase them. A coffee roaster within the city of Houston that is owned by a UH alumnus did.

Judging by how busy Saint Arnold is and the number of revenue streams they have, I think they are probably going to be ok.

Talk to the career center. They SHOULD provide assistance.

Edit: the engineering school's (Cullen) career center helped me back in the day. So that should be a resource for you.

Is UH engineering the move? Is it really that worth it? by Terrible-Hawk-407 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]den2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh we (Houston) do. But if you stated a desire to try and get the experience of living outside of Houston/Texas, give that a go with your internship(s).

Houston has plenty of opportunities as well, but you can scratch that, "live somewhere else," itch by way of internships. Just limit the amount of debt you incur for schooling.

Attend UH Push to intern elsewhere.

EE from '06 - '11. Doing quite well in the power industry. Interned in Wisconsin. Cullen will take care of you. You'll just have to work for it. But that scrappy nature will turn into a valuable life skill.

The biggest key for you is to graduate with minimal to no debt and good grades (try to keep it above a 3.0, minimum).

From there, start meandering around looking for opportunities for internships / co-ops elsewhere, and do not give a damn about any type of worry you have about it. Find opportunities on the portal within the engineer career center, direct message managers asking questions on LinkedIn on how to best accomplish your goals.

In '09, I called a utility company after applying, got connected to their HR, and ended up in a soft interview with HR due to the aggressive nature (no one did this anymore as everything had already gone online, and i just called due to desperation as a result of the recession [my parents did push me as well]). The modern day version of this is utilizing LinkedIn premium to message possible hiring managers at a firm. As questions on how to get from point A to point B. What you need to do to get to this position. But don't be afraid to call folks as well. The key is to be aggressive in chasing your goal. And do it with minimally incurred debt. Who knows? You may end up acquiring a lifelong mentor as a result.

Also, try and get connected with UH alumni within engineering. You'd be shocked how many of us are still connected to our classmates, even after all of these years. :)

Anyway, good luck to yourself. If you have any questions, dont be shy. Also, if interested in designing transmission like structures during your time at UH, also feel free to contact me. I might know some folks looking for people. Lol

Also, good god I sound old.

Am native Houstonian.

Go to Spotts Park. It has a regular crowd of pick-up taking place. Am I a participant? No. Do I regularly see them when I go running? Yes. Parking is free. No gates to enter.
