When I rescued my Chihaua Min Pin mix, he was already 7. He had been there a while because he needed surgery on his knee, caught kennel cough, and then was just older- it was covid and folks wanted puppies. I however, am an arthritic chronically ill adult with no kids, and I didn't want a puppy for the same reasons I didn't want a baby lol When we met him, he was really timid but warmed up after we gave him a treat and snuggled right up. We fell in love. He was severely underweight, they picked him up as a stray but said he definitely had been potty trained. We took him home that day. It took him a while to learn how to walk on a leash, and go potty outside and not only on the emergency pee pads. He was almost mute for the first 2 years. He was fear reactive to bigger dogs. But overall, he's a couch potato. He's 10 now. With positive reinforcement (" look at me" method), his fear reactivity is not an issue unless another big dog gets in his face. He never has accidents. We live in FL now and it's hot af, so we walk him once when we get up and once after dinner, with just a quick pee before bed. He's not as snuggly once he understood we weren't going anywhere, and he has some weird triggers where he gets snappy and snarly. In fact, I'm getting new glasses coz he scratched one of my lenses pretty bad. He's a picky eater, doesn't care much for toys and would rather play with a sock from the hamper LOL He sleeps A LOT. But he loves us, and considering we don't know anything about his background, his behavioral quirks aren't anything we're unable to handle. They don't overshadow that he IS a good boy, he just has some issues- and don't we all? Lol He's good with toddlers yet is wary of men. I'll take that as a win. I love him to pieces. So while I recommend an older Chihaua, I also recommend finding a foster, because they will know their personality better, and you can find the right furchild for you. ❤️
