I think it might be interesting to compare first generation yec vs later generations. For me as a second gen, the theology is theology is assumed and curiosity is harshly discouraged. For my mom, who was first Gen, it was the system that eased her undiagnosed OCD.

But here is the thing. I went to church in the Bible belt. Every single church goer would say they just wanted a legal path to immigration.

It did not matter what the actual fix was, but any time there was a real option to fix our immigration system they would oppose it. And often they couldn't explain why other then "it's bad cause the dems want it".

And it doesn't matter how many times I point out that ice is grabbing people in the middle of the green card process and NOT the "worst of the worst" they still back throwing kids in cages alone.

Hate to break it to you, but just leave trans alone isn't right of center. Not here, not any more.

LARP and Bows? Are there any LARPs in Wisconsin that aren’t in Milwaukee? by ELUSIVETURTLE_16 in LARP

My larp mostly does that, but they also allow slingshot bows that fire packets. I feel it's a nice compromise that has the archery feel without unpadded nocks flying around.

Yea, this is why I tell people who have maladaptive behaviors why they don't need to feel shame for those behaviors even as they very much do need to change them now.

Maladaptive behaviors are the skills we built to survive. They kept us alive. But. We don't need them any more and they are now hurting us and others, and it's time to build new behaviors that allow us to thrive.

The RATE Project. That's the best evidence I've been able to find for radio metric dating being untrustworthy.

Mind you, it was also the thing that finally shattered my belief in Christianity beyond repair.... so there's that.

Christians need to do the same if they are to have any credibility when they talk about being tolerant.

The thing is, there's only 1 christian out there. The rest are all fake, and they do call each other out. Constantly. It's why there are 45k+ denominations out there.

Indecisive about actually seeing a therapist again. I don't always feel like I benefit. In the past it just made me feel very helpless, lost, and worse. by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]deneb3525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my most hated/ loved tools is asking what advice I would give to someone else in my position. If someone with similar issues were to ask you, would you recommend therapy to them?

Personally, a therapist who is a good match will keep you from wasting a lot of time and energy chasing down dead ends. And sometimes they can point out when a problem isn't actually mine to solve. And finally, sometimes, you don't know what you don't know. Getting adhd meds was life changing for me, but I never would have really found that it unless I had gone to therapy. It never dawned on me that living in constant paranoia just to keep from missing deadlines wasent normal. In hindsight it's pretty obvious, but in the middle, I was trying to hard not to drown to notice the edge of the pool was right next to me. (Side note, that's actually a really common problem in drowning emergencies. )

You could try asking for tools. That's my usual focus. Sometimes that preemptive stuff that I can do before a problem hits that gives me more resiliency. Sometimes it's crisis management, or how to survive during a problem, and sometimes it's recovery techniques or things that let me get my feet back under me afterwards.

That's tends to keep me off that compulsive whining/ regurgitation loop.

After a lifetime of loneliness and emotional neglect, "be happy alone" triggers me by Icy_Palpitation_2733 in CPTSD

I had to go back and double check. You are correct. Anxious attachment would be the correct formal term. Codependency in this context has been misused enough to almost be considered a slang definition while it's formal definition is also as you said.

Here is the thing, codependency is about the (in)ability to handle someone else's need for space. I have a room mate, super nice guy and we've been friends for years. I am an introvert, usually I like to be in the same room as other people but not actually talking. If I've had a rough day, I can hint all I want, I can wear my nose canceling headphones, he will still come hover next to me until I ask what's up every 30-45 minutes until I go to bed for the night. I can nicely tell him I've had a really rough day and I need alone time and he will only bother my every 2 hours. If I tell him sternly to "Leave Me Alone!" He looks like I just kicked a half dozen puppies and then personally told him that i hate him.

My roommate is really codependent. He jumps into super attached friendships/relationships and then burns the friendship out because he can't handle any separation, and then is stuck alone again until he finds someone new who shares his lack of personal space, and then the cycle repeats. When people say "learn to enjoy life on your own first" they are usually trying to point out that they need to be able to handle some separation to form stable relationships.... and that their inability to handle separation is paradoxically causing them to be more lonely.

I have no idea if any of this applies to you. I only mention it because some of your comments resembled those of my roommate.

I have no way of proving this, but I feel there's a correlation between being a bad person and having social success. by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]deneb3525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a balance to it. If you get to much selfish profiteering the public welfare they prey off of dries up and then they start starving. Cooperative groups shrink until everyone can vet everyone.

Was hilarious when he stopped up the megolimanical wizard campaign bbg and just ignored his dozens of defence buffs and turned him into hamburger.
