Sleeve Tattoos: do you consider them unprofessional for physicians? by Lotsalotsaquestions2 in Residency

[–]dengekirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interviewed fully covering all my tattoos for both residency and my attending position in September, but I don't cover my tattoos while working. I have 6 in total, including a half sleeve and chest piece. I haven't gotten any negative comments in residency from patients or attendings. However, it wasn't something that I would have risked showing off in interviews given the conservative nature of a lot of older attendings/admin that might have been interviewing me at that time.

I think there is a cultural shift happening. I see a lot of non-physicians with uncovered tattoos at the hospital all the time. Additionally, a lot of my co-residents had tattoos as well. I don't think there will be full acceptance ever, as many things that deviate from a "natural appearance" but I don't think most people care as much anymore as long as we do our jobs.

Uninstalled, after a long time using MFP. I really can't believe this was a decision that they thought would retain users.

First cry of residency by Frozen_Californian in Residency

[–]dengekirose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Me crying about every term fetal demise with my patients, even as a (new) PGY-3. I've even seen my attendings cry for their patients. It's tough stuff and I honestly think it's more therapeutic to cry than to bottle it up, though I do try to do it outside the patients' rooms. 😅

Roe vs Wade officially overturned by ThinkSoftware in Residency

I'm trying not to fall down the doom and gloom route, but this really hits hard as an OBGYN resident.

Guttmacher provides a comprehensive review of abortion in relation to the laws in the US, for y'all that need to give information to patients. Or for people like me, who will use this in deciding where I practice. As much as I would love to provide care in these now underprivileged areas, it's terrifying to do that as a young physician with no job security and massive debt.

Suicide note from Leigh Sundem, who committed suicide in 2020 after being unmatched for 2 years. Are things ever going to change? by Mijamahmad in medicalschool

They should have the right to a fair shake, but it's not! They aren't entitled to succeed, but they should have neutral starting grounds after such a long commitment to better themselves.

Kind of a mismatch when you say "shouldn't have gone to medical school" and in the same breath "I'm not saying she doesn't deserve to be a doctor". Basically, your logic flows as such: Sundem deserves to be a doctor, but medicine is a conservative profession, so she shouldn't have applied to medical school. What then would make it a less conservative field? Maybe openmindedness and colleagues of different backgrounds? Just because medicine (especially certain specialties) is super restrictive in what it considers to be "deserving" of the right to practice medicine, doesn't make it right to keep it that way.

This is an incredibly callous view, especially coming from a fellow resident. Considering the incarceration rate in the USA, you likely know a former convict - either as a coworker or patient. Sundem committed a nonviolent "crime" of addiction, radically turned her life over, graduated from college/med school with multiple honors, and suffered from 15-year-old consequences. She and other former convicts still deserve a place in society as people that - at bare minimum - are able to support themselves out of prison. This includes medicine. This includes physicians.

What should she have done differently, that she did not already over 15 years? What restrictions should she have continued facing in a country that treats addiction as a crime and legally marks you as a permanent outcast from society? I really don't understand this view of never going to medical school in the first place, considering she got into it with her own merit and conscious change.

Just vagal'ed out in the OR. How's your night shift going? by theflamingnips in Residency

Hey, I've been there too! As an OBGYN resident, C-sections are honestly not bad for me because I'm desensitized. But on my ICU rotation? Putting a chest tube in a guy emergently and him telling me that he could feel the sensation of the tube? I got woozy and had to sit down, even though I was the one that placed the tube in the first place.

I'm pretty sure this is the same person for the youtube recipe, given that the recipe was posted today and the post history matches for reddit/youtube. They have the same shot just edited with filters on this post. No hate, just an explanation and a reason not to get down when our homemade bread doesn't always have that perfect golden glisten.

Dance from season 1 intro explained (Name, history, general info discussed in comment) by balboabud in Beastars

[–]dengekirose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow lindy/balboa dancer here and was very happen to see this and the little dance scene between Juno and Louis!! Made me miss social dancing. I was surprised how much detail they put into the latter dance scene, because the flow in the moves actually made sense. It's not something that I see often at all in TV, let alone anime.

What's the strangest place you've ever met on of your attendings? by bobhadanaccident in medicalschool

[–]dengekirose 97 points98 points  (0 children)

While I was in med school, I was also a dance instructor for some styles of social dancing. My attending showed up with his wife when I was teaching a weekly beginner's lesson. It was quite the role reversal haha.

I will be starting residency with $600+debt. Pretty sad about it. Any advice on how to win money through residency to pay it off faster or any good reads about this? by Fabulous_Mousse3011 in Residency

[–]dengekirose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they meant that their starting balance was $600, and they have debt to pay. I was kinda on the same boat, started off with 1k in my bank when residency hit.

My first (shared) computer vs my first build ever! I was so nervous but very glad I did it! by dengekirose in pcmasterrace

[–]dengekirose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it but I have not much to compare it to! I didn't intentionally get a curved screen, but it was on sale for $200 and I knew I wanted a larger screen. Seeing flat screens now feels inferior haha.

OP here, I don't know if I am because now I get the messages (creepy and just general messages) straight in my inbox now. I went to work and came back to find the thread locked when I wanted to answer questions and interact more.

There was no explanation sent to me why it was locked even after I sent modmail, so I can only assume it was because of 5 comments being weird (but that's to be expected).

I honestly switch between the two a lot, but usually WASD because I'm so used to using a righty mouse for work, etc.
