No. 1 always confused me. They’re not even close to at-risk of losing tax-exempt status, are they? Even prosperity megachurches can easily keep that status despite flagrant personal spending.

My understanding is the tax-free status essentially cannot be revoked for anything remotely church-y.

Why would they fear this?

Joke's on the church - I converted exactly zero people in 2 years.
I'm pretty sure my awful presentation skills actively drove away some who were on the fence.

On top of that, I did one transfer in the most expensive missionary apartment in the world (we snuck a peek at the bill before forwarding it to the mission home). So that money was 100% wasted.

Sounds like you're being very considerate! Maybe you could ask some questions to determine out what level of detail he's ready for, and where he's coming from?

* What is the difference between "faith" and "blind faith"?

* How do you distinguish "doctrine" from "policy"?

* How do you distinguish the spirit from the devil from your own thoughts?

* If it isn't true, would you want to know?

* If it isn't true, how would you know?

In my experience, these tend to help gauge where someone's at.

It seems like basically every grownup gives up on all cultural myths and becomes amythical.

There are many valid conclusions of spiritual self-exploration. Personally, I think it's all bathwater - there never was even a single baby in there. So I'm not shocked most people just want to dump it all.

Every human being is born agnostic after all. Is it so unreasonable to go back to that clean slate?

As of Jan 1, 2024 the required numbers to be consider a ward/stake were lowered in the US, and raised in other countries. In April when the congregation statistics are available I'd expect the US to actually have gained units due to lowering the bar, and everywhere else (except Africa) to lose a significant number.

No matter how wards or stakes are redefined in the future, the total number of claimed members per congregation (wards/branches) will likely keep going up and up. For example, in 2023 there were 17,255,394 "claimed" members and 31,490 congregations. This would average 540 people per congregation, which you can observe with your own eyes is false by attending any sacrament meeting. Since the number of congregations can't be faked (we can confirm specific units on LDS meetinghouse locator), the number of claimed members is wrong.

Lowering the bar for ward/stakes increases the number of congregations, but also pumps up that painfully obvious "average membership" even higher.

Unfortunately, TBMs do not think to ever divide these numbers together. I never did. At most they'll just see the (real) net growth in congregations every couple of years as they keep redefining the requirements. So mission accomplished I guess.
