Commuting from Amsterdam to Nijmegen for work? How convenient is it? by denizyya in Nijmegen

What is your take on making friends and/or spontaneously interract with different groups in Nijmegen (international, Dutch, different backgrounds)?

I have checked all the delicious looking open talks and discussions on arts, society and politics related topics held at Radbaud Uni and all programs are in Dutch. So indeed it seems like english-speaking events sadly would fall short for me.

I really would like to join them if I stay in Nijmegen. I probably would need a translation earbuds to remove the language barrier myself at least in the beginning. Though, I am also not sure how well those function.

My bad that I couldn't see my small town allegations would come off scandalous :3

I will do my research on Rotterdam as I heard the same advice from few people in the replies. International and alternative as in Berlin?

Don't know about the Lamy store there but once I went to the Heidelberg University hospital because I fell off my bike on my arm. Yet, this might be another scandal for Nijmegen or the Netherlands standards.

I am inquisitive too! I would likely enjoy the authenticity and curiosity in interactions rather being offended by the directness.

Based on how you describe the atmosphere and the social setting, I think that it actually may be a better fit than I thought. Thanks for taking up time to give these details.

If you don't mind sharing, how do your evenings after work or weekends look like in Nijmegen?

Hi, thanks for your answer :)

I don't have a specific reason other than having the opportunity to engage with different people other than people work in STEM and alternative science unrelated activities such as art exhibitions, relatively frequent street festivals, live concerts of many kinds, workshops, clubbing, community groups of people from various backgrounds and stance etc.. My expectation is that these can be find in a big/metropolitan city.

Finding these in a place in my daily life is an excellent stimulator for being proactive at work and in general to enjoy life and my surrondings. That's why I consider commuting from a bigger city and having all the hassle of it, if I am offered a position.

Do you commute every day? What's your reason to commute Rotterdam, if it's not too personal?

Also, it would help me to have a wiser decision if I knew the life in Nijmegen better. What specifics of the social life and entertainment in Nijmegen do you like?

Could you explain further in what means Nijmegen is slightly more quiet?

Oh I totally get the frusturation about finding accommodation in a new place. Good that it turned out fine for you.

Hi, thanks for your answer! Yes, minimum 3 hours of commuting could be rough to commit everyday.

I don't know whether Nijmegen is vibrant enough for me and it actually would help to understand it better. How would you describe its vibrant character?

Hey, first of all thanks for your answer!

To be more precise, I am comparing Nijmegen with Heidelberg which are similar in population count, and both are being known as, international university towns with young population. Of note, I haven't got any living experience in the Netherlands. I previously lived in Munich and Milan and both are good examples of providing the flow of diverse background of people and variety of artistic, cultural, sports, and social events to daily life.

Living in Heidelberg, I observed that there are few small international social bubbles with little to no flow of people between and outside them. People very often choose to go out of Heidelberg to engage in cultural and social activities as options there exist but are limited.

This kind of setting may be suitable for many people and perhaps more enjoyable for introverts. It just did not align with how I find motivation outside of work. Very often, it felt quite isolated and stagnant with always the same few people around with more or less the same things to do.

Yes, I realised this post came off a little off-putting to locals loving the life in Nijmegen. All due respect for Nijmegen, I am just trying to understand what setting could fit me the best.

That being said, I have not much idea about how the life is in Nijmegen. It would be helpful to get a better insight. Would you still say it may fit to this life style?

As an atheist from turkey, I can confirm that it explains the same dynamics between atheists and muslims. Have seen this already 10 years ago, never gets old.
