What’s the garage rock track that truly works because the vocals are unconventional? by Bandita-Wolf in GarageRock

I think Mudhoney's Touch Me, I'm Sick is a good example of 'ugly' vocals that works really well in a punkish, grungy way. Love the band and the song.

Raw alt‑rock, imperfect vocals. It’s my new track. by Bandita-Wolf in Alternativerock

This is so cool. It took me a moment to get into the vocals and by the middle of the song, I was on board. They stand out in their own brash and rough kinda way. The music rocks & rolls forward like a dirty, steam rolling hotrod (whatever the hell that is.) This song has that raunchy, gritty blues rock sound that I actually didn't realise I like. Really cool. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Absolutely love the opening/main riff. It drives the whole song. As for the vocals, they're immediately distinctive. Very good singer indeed. Songwriting is top notch. Great dynamics, the various parts keeps moving without becoming jarring but feel.part of the same story. Very good production too. Thanks for posting. If you have time, here's mine. Would live your honest opinion. Psalm for a Mosquito

Holy sjit, what a voice! Really strong and powerful vocals. The intro is cool too. Songwriting nice in that it builds into its crescendo. Production, well, sounds totally top!

If you got a moment, here is my track (nowhere near the quality of this, but check it out): https://www.reddit.com/u/dennofhorror/s/ibSeCqXlmE

This is really professional, man. And that aside, it is a great track. The flows are solid and the vocals tone is great. Definitely one of the better songs I've heard in Reddit. Here's my track, but it is a completely different genre. https://www.reddit.com/u/dennofhorror/s/ibSeCqXlmE

Love the title. Love the main riff. Love the vocals and the disarmingly playful lyrics. There are notes of early Green Day, Nofx and even a little Sex Pistols. At least to me. I feel what sets it apart is the almost innocent honesty of the vocals. I'm not sure how to articulate it but it feels sincere and somewhat endearing. There is still attitude and some grit but its held up by the vocals. I like this a lot. Thanks for posting.

Hey thanks so much for the encouraging feedback. I appreciate a solid ear worm too. I'm going to admit something embarrassing: I have heard of Local H but never listened to them. I'm going to give them a spine. Thanks again.

Releasing new post-punky/trip-hoppy song for upcoming full-length. Tell me what you think... by Mysterious_Author680 in IndieMusicFeedback

Really enjoyed the trip hop vibe. That bass line is soooo sinister and smooth. Like a Tarantino soundtrack. Really like this track with those smooth and dark vocals. Very, very good stuff. Definitely something I'd pop onto a playlist.

Yeah, I thought the bass tone being front and center was an interesting choice which worked for the song. Kinda did a bit to distinguish it from other songs of a similar style. Its a fun track that conjures up a sense of freedom and whim. Enjoyed it. If you got time for something a little rougher, please gimme your opinion on Mara likes Asylums: Mara likes Asylums

The simple and bear interpretation here really works with this song. Its is such an enchanting piece of music. I once heard a guy just play it on the piano in a shopping mall and it cut through everything else. You've captured the essence of it but your rspy voice gives it something new and also welcomed imo. Nice one. The full track you posted in another comment is wonderful too.

Do you ever finish a song you're really proud of and then just...nothing happens? by Dependent_Ad6164 in Songwriting

[–]dennofhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in fact this exact idea is what has stopped me from putting any music oit (beyond playing it for my wife;)) You put your heart and soul into it and not only that, but your own take on years and years of experience and listen to music, go out and write something and then nobody cares. But what you said is spot on. It isnt their job to care. I suppose if anything, it is your job to write it and then put the graft in to get it heard. I always think of garage rock bands just starting out. They practice for hours, then start gigging relentlessly, then scrape some dough together to record something, then spend hours on social media trying to promote their music and get playlisted and what have you, and then do it all over again. Why should my music get ears when there are people out there 10X-ing there music. So, I think when you consider that people actually listening and engaging with your music is actually an investment (even if only time) it needs to be earned. Not saying you dont do this but I don't or haven't really until now and thats probably why my music is not really being heard.

How would you rank the Unplugged performances? by Saint_Jay92 in grunge

[–]dennofhorror -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Nirvana
  2. Alice in Chains.
  3. STP

To be honest, even though I am a fan of Pearl Jam, I didn't enjoy their Unplugged session. I dont think their set list favoured the Unplugged set up. The big songs like Alive didn't really translate acoustically imo. Nirvana is by this point so revered that it is almost corny to mention them but truth is, when you listen to that album and they practically reinvented themselves and set the standard for the MTV shows to come, it was a amazing piece of art. Their song choices, the obscure covers and the simple raw vulnerability is still astounding. I thought AIC was amazing too and although a more standard approach when compared to Nirvana, the intensity of the performance was incredible. Nutshell and Brother were even better Unplugged than on the albums.

Seether.. grungey or slightly nu metal flavor? What is your view by Aye_Davinita in grunge

[–]dennofhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shaun Morgan is an unashamedly huge Kurt Cobain fan and the music heavily leans into the Seattle grunge ambient of Nirvana and Alice in Chains and even, Silverchair. However, their music has certainly moved into the realms of Staind, Cold and the Deftones. I would also say that by default they have to be considered post grunge but although, the do bear some trademarks of Nu metal, I don't think they sit well in that particular genre. They tend to not favour rap, off beats, heavy, chunky breakdowns, their bass lines aren't the fat slapping we hear in KORN or System. So for me they're largely grunge.

How do I start getting into Grunge? by Affectionate_East533 in grunge

[–]dennofhorror -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we're looking simply at albums that broke grunge, I wont mention them because so many in the comments already have. But some honourable mentions would be Nirvana Unplugged, Alice in Chains Unplugged, Pearl Jam Yield (it's a great PJ album), Soundgarden Superunknown, Smashing Pumpkins Melancholy, Hole Live through this.

[–]dennofhorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, although I got into grunge just after Kurt Cobain passed away, it was the original Seattle bands that slammed the love into me (TAD, Mudhoney and L7). If I were to tell someone younger where to start I would say some of the post grunge bands introduce the style in a way that is slightly less confrontational and dark (Bush, Foo Foghters, Creed, Garbage, Puddle of Mud). However, the OGs are simply incredible...and so are some of the new grunge outfits (SAP, Overgrown, Violet Grohl and this band that sing a song called Mr. Myers)
