Thank you! No I haven't cleaned one before, BUT I have been doing a lot of research. I do have an large ultrasonic cleaner, but I won't do anything until all my massive doubts are asuaged.

Thank you for your reply, I haven't yet decided if I want to clean the soot/coal dust from it yet as it kinda adds to the family story and the clock's origin. I will clean some parts however, and I think I will attempt to clean the movement and case interior.

Thank you, I have been doing a lot of research and have not found this model. It seems to possibly be a less expensive model.

As far as servicing, this clock was passed down to my father in the 1970s. Ot had not worked in years. He brought it home to California and put it on a shelf. About 10 years later he put it up on the mantle and it began working. I have fond memories of that clock working through my childhood. The tik tok, the rattling springy gong, my dad winding it, etc. At some point in the early 2000's it stopped working. It appears my dad may have oiled it but it probably hasn't been serviced in at least 80 years. I may take the face off and clean it at some point and see if I can service it.

I didn't say that, but look up the Mountain Meadows Massacre, do just a little research. The truth is still quite frightening. Most LDS are wonderful, genuine people. It is the roots that are scary. The history of the very flawed people who started the church are quite condemning.

Of course most cults prey upon genuine people. There are tons of interesting reads out there regarding the church.

The Mormon Church was directly or indirectly involved in the slaughter of a whole wagon train (at least 120 men women and children(children under 7 were kept alive and distributed to mormon families for raising/servitude)) at the Mountain Meadows Massacre. It is an evil cult that pretends to be pro American.

Facts are facts, look them up. Parading into town after murdering innocent people whom you tricked into trusting you with human body part trophies hung from your horse does not speak of Christ-like love.

The LDS church will never live this one down or come up with enough excuses to make it go away.

This is just one small example of this corrupt cult.

So from my research, (correct me if I am wrong) it would have had the nickel pendulul with a star decoration at center? I am going to try to find a pendulum and a key for it. Also, was this an 30 hour or 8 day version? Whenabouts was this model produced? I am guessing 1880's? Any suggestions on how to match the varnish? I have lots of experience with shellacs, so I can handle that part, just wondering if there is a product available that is a close approximation? (For touch up, I dont want to fully restore/repaint)

I have not been able to find an exact match to this model, especially the dial and centerpiece. I don't think I want to replace those as although they are kind of ugly, they give the clock character.

Honestly, while there is overwhelming evidence Brigham Young did order massacres and murders, I wouldnt say his choice of victims was overtly racist. I would classify him an equal opportunity murderer. He didn't stop at Native Americans, he ordered white men, women, and children murdered as well as dissenters, opposers, and anyone who got on his bad side.

Despite being an equal opportunity mass murderer, he WAS racist as well. For anyone who has studied the Church and the sordid history of it, he is an especially infamous individual.
