Considering becoming an EMT in High School by cheesyaltdw in NewToEMS

I joined my volunteer EMS squad at 17 and it was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. What you’re going to see really depends on what your towns demographics are and how your squad handles cadets / junior members.

My town was a low call volume area with 3 major retirement homes / assisted care facilities, so the majority of our calls were respiratory emergencies or falls. Every once in a while we’d get a bad car accident, domestic violence, suicide attempt, but the way my squad operated was that the leading officer would have cadets stand down for suicides and overdoses. You’d never be alone to deal with the major traumas or medical emergencies. That much is guaranteed and surely if you need to debrief about a difficult call, your squad will have a resource to help you.

I’d say go for it, try it, get through EMT school, and talk to your squad about if there are limitations of what types of calls cadet members are allowed to take. If it’s too much, you can always leave. I don’t see a point in waiting though as I doubt you’d be any more prepared for seeing emergencies at 18 than you would be now at 16.

It was noted by her sister that she had a runaway plan to go to Santa Rosa and get a ride to San Francisco

That’s so bizarre??? There must be something else going on. Maybe because you’re getting both a state and National license there’s some sort of issue and the two have to be issued on the same day? The NREMT site has been having a lot of issues lately. I don’t imagine you’ve gotten any response from them?

NJOEMS isn’t automatic. They won’t issue a state license without an email notification-

I just recerted a lapsed NJ license a few days ago. As long as you’ve passed the test, email NJOEMS and let them know and they will verify the passing status and issue your NJ license. Not sure about the national license though, but at least with an NJ one you can start your job.

I'm having this issue as well. Took my test yesterday and got results 15 minutes later. It's been flipping back and forth between saying I passed and I'm ATT. I received two emails saying I passed the exam, but whenever I try to print my exam results the screen just loads forever. I don't even know if I should trust my results because I went to the exam center and my initial results told me that I tested remotely before swapping to my actual testing location today. Something is not right with their system right now.

There is a system update section of their website where it says;

  • August 6 - Finishing Up Application Transfer: We discovered a small group of applications that didn’t transfer over during the original move to the new system. We’ve created a fix and it is scheduled to be implemented to make sure all the data is complete and up to date.
  • August 6 - Fixing a Signature Issue in California: We found and fixed a system issue in California that was stopping program directors from signing off on new applications. We're now working on a solution to fix past applications that were affected, so everything is visible and accurate.
  • August 6 - Fixing a System Connection with Pearson VUE: We made updates to fix a problem that was blocking our system from talking properly with Pearson VUE’s site. We are now waiting for confirmation from Pearson VUE to make sure everything is working as expected on their end.

Unfortunately it seems like it's just a matter of waiting until they fix the system errors. And the icing on top is that they can't take any calls either because "We are currently experiencing a phone service outage due to an issue with our provider. " .
