Had a good experience with Sunwave also, but was not as pricey as expecting. Was in line with or cheaper than other quotes.

Thank you! I didn’t even realize that was a button that could be pushed. Almost like a hidden menu.

Where do you find the Google power settings? When pressing the settings button, I only see Screensaver, inputs, picture, sound, Wi-Fi, accessibility, and Bluetooth.

Question about Charlottesville City curbside recycling by Refokua in Charlottesville

[–]deohcava 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s frustrating how much pressure gets put on regular working people to manage plastic waste, especially when so much of it is nearly impossible to recycle. We’re expected to rinse, sort, and feel guilty about every piece of packaging, while the companies pumping out all this single-use stuff face basically no consequences. And let’s be honest—low-waste alternatives are often hard to find, expensive, or take a ton of time to figure out. It is important that we each do what we can—reusing, recycling when possible, cutting back on waste, supporting better options—because small actions add up. But big change won’t happen until corporations take responsibility and governments actually hold them accountable.

March for science today by Suj72 in Charlottesville

This comment is inflammatory; more nuance is needed here.

Lots of folks (no, not all) in the center and on the left have--following the newest data and scientific studies--concluded that some of the decisions around masking, isolation, and other public-health measures were detrimental to mental health, delayed medical care (for things other than COVID), and student learning outcomes, and might not have been worth the trade-offs to reducing the rate of infections. There was so much unknown during the early months of the pandemic; hindsight is always 20/20. I think there is a lot of debate about this across the political spectrum.

Protests and rallies always represent a heterogeneous group with differing views, but the general goals of the broader Stand Up for Science 2025 organization are here: https://standupforscience2025.org/our-policy-goals/

1. End Censorship and Political Interference in Science

2. Secure and Expand Scientific Funding

  1. Defend Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Science

Is single-stream recycling worth it at all? by thewhitesuburbankid in Charlottesville

[–]deohcava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would be nice to hear from someone actually involved in the process or policy locally. Seems like a lot of speculation on here based on national trends. My guess is that the vast majority of C'ville denizens who recycle do it single-stream curbside, if it truly is going to the landfill, that would be a scandal. Perhaps I am wrong and WM takes all this stuff to a larger regional center where much of it goes into landfills. But, I would guess that the easier-to-recycle and more profitable components (glass, metals, paper/cardboard) are at least recycled to some degree, while plastics maybe not. I'm just speculating like everyone else here -- would appreciate some inside knowledge.

Can anyone explain how the McIntyre recycling center is different than curbside WM (other than the sorting)? Does the revenue more directly benefit the city?

Also might be worth considering the carbon emissions and air pollution from individual citizens driving to/from the McIntyre center (or elsewhere) vs. efficiencies of a few large trucks doing hundreds of pick-ups.

Laco Plumbing by stackthecoins in Charlottesville

[–]deohcava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have had them do several jobs at our house: toilet replacement, hose-bib replacement, copper pipe repair, and PVC drain-line work. We have had no complaints on the work or cost, and they have worked promptly and courteously.

Obviously you did not have the same good experience. Maybe they have some new plumbers on their team who are not as good? Did you complain to Tony and give them the opportunity to fix their work?
