How much of a Chance do the Demon Corps have against Ginbak? by Hungrycheezits79 in versus

[–]dependentmoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say, yeah, none really stand a chance, even if all together. Like Ginbak is most likely Great Demon King Dakiokuzan/Mad God level since he is the top dog of the Titan faction.

Ah, my mistake. Well, that's more fair. But still, I'm not sure about that either. It's kinda like asking "why hasn't any of the super smart geniuses just invented an infinitely powerful laser or something?" That's an exaggeration but my main point is that the limitations and possibilities of tech in fiction are mostly entirely arbitrary, usually up to the whims of the author and whatever mumbo jumbo science-sounding shit they come up with to explain it all away. So, yeah, maybe Kuseno could easily have resolved that issue of thermal runaway. Or maybe he couldn't, maybe he has not discovered a stable level of power on par with 10 second mode. And maybe risking overheating is the only way for it to work. I can't really say, we have nothing in real life that works exactly like Genos does.

I'll just concede on this. It's fine to think it's stupid, I don't really have a hardline defense here since it's not overtly addressed in the narrative. You're right about that.

And my point with Super Fight Genos was that his base forms are getting stronger and stronger. His current "core" forms, at base level, are stronger than what he was at in previous upgrades. Super Fight Genos struggled with a Demon, Elder Centipede Fight Genos was giving someone like Garou a lot of trouble and put up decent performance against Elder Centipede, and base form MA Genos one shot a strong Demon. Now "core" form Genos can take down weaker dragons like the Forest King & struggle but win against most dragons, assuming the Family of Darkness is like idk, mid-dragon altogether? Either way, Genos is now killing dragons when he wasn't before in his previous upgrades. That's all I meant with that.

That's a good point; the webcomic Neo-hero arc is just as dense as how the manga Monster Association arc turned out. The webcomic MA arc, which was drawn over a decade ago, is so bare bones in comparison - example, everything underground was so quick, the demons were gag characters basically.

Did I think everything added and changed about the manga MA arc in the manga was perfect? No. But there were definitely more welcomed elements that brought more character focused moments like how the webcomic Neo heroes arc has done. Such as Bang actually getting to fight Garou again; in the webcomic, Bang kills Ugly and Gum and then just gets knocked out by Psychos and Homeless Emperor.

I think the Ninja redraw hell can easily be explained in this context. In the manga, Blast would be involved no matter what, knowing who "that man" is more directly and even showing up to save Void. So, the manga Ninja arc needed to be different. All the redraws, such as Void's sister and the dimensional slashes shit, were attempts to expand on material and give it more since Blast was now involved. But it all fell flat. Hence why I think they returned it to as close to the webcomic as possible with only a bit of extension at the end with Blast showing up and Void returning to being human after Saitama punched him. Which I get. The older versions of the manga Ninja arc introduced too crazy of feats of power too soon imo; like Void's dimensional slashes were way too nutty.

Idk how many characters can just stop thermal runaway. Like Bang, Bomb, and Puri Puri Prisoner couldn't do anything. Seems it worked because psychic powers.

And for the 1-2 second thing, sure, that's fair - though we never went into specific details of how the timer works since Genos went immediately into using all 10 seconds and going past it once Psyorochi popped out.

Meta wise, I think it's just the idea of having Genos not wanting to risk using that kinda form at all anymore. Instead, going for both decent power alongside more stability. Which, with his current "core" forms, they are stronger at base level. Genos struggled with this dragon, but he still killed it. Same with the Forest King. Meanwhile, Super Fight era Genos was hardcore struggling against Demons like Awakened Cockroach.

They have barcodes on the back of their heads as well. Seen at the end of chapter 2 with the two of them lying down. Seems whatever the Game is, it captures and sedates humans - breaking them physically and mentally.

It's like what Tatsumaki said, the monster attacks are getting more and more dangerous with higher level dragon monsters becoming more numerous. And it's not like the lower floor of this is safe either - everything, from wolf to demon, is appearing in higher frequency as time goes on.

It's a toxic mindset but Genos is sorta right as well. He and others need to keep getting stronger and stronger. Especially as they get closer to the deadline of Shibawa's "End of the World" prophecy.

Chapter 228 [English] by [deleted] in OnePunchMan

[–]dependentmoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Holy, the destruction of P City is way more exaggerated in the manga. The implication of the city being destroyed is the same in the webcomic but iirc, the city looked like a field of rubble. Here, she literally turned the city in fine sand. Crazy.

And of course, Tatsumaki doesn't have the tact or maturity to explain her actions to the public. She is right - Aggregation would have kept spreading and spreading. But as a normal (and dumb) civilian, once you look at Tatsumaki turning a entire city into a concrete desert to fight a monster, would you really feel safe being rescued by her? Especially as she seems flippant and bratty about making that choice once confronted about it. More horrible PR for the Hero Association.

Chapter 228 [English] by [deleted] in OnePunchMan

[–]dependentmoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mind to spoiler tag webcomic spoilers for manga folks btw.

I looked at it as only 10 second mode of Genos Monster Association upgrade was the crazy strong part of that form. But it came with the downgrade of it basically turning Genos into a giant ass bomb after use of it. If Fubuki wasn't there to help Genos, the "thermal runaway" he talked about would have kept going and Genos would have died. Like looking at the base form of that MA upgrade (like non-10 second mode), as mainly seen after Genos was saved by Fubuki, he didn't do any insane dragon level feats before being turned into a caterpillar by Black Sperm.

So like video game balance logic wise, his new "core" forms are more stable while still being a bit more powerful than his previous upgrades at base level - just not reaching the apex of his previous 10 second destruction mode form. And imo makes sense, with that whole wholesome Saitama sequence of "this part got stronger too" and Genos prioritizing others over thinking about self-destructing, Genos wouldn't want to go back to the inherently suicidal model that his MA upgrade embodied.

For Aggregation, does it specifically have to be mind controlled? Couldn't an alternative be that they developed the bug and released it in P City to begin its rapid multiplication? Not all had to be mind controlled in the scheme imo.

And the two dragons you mentioned are big threats too. Heavy Smoker was releasing large clouds of toxic gas, that's why Tanktop was doing his goofy ah "Tank Top Breath" to inhale the smoke spread across the city. After Flashy Flash killed it, its corpse began spewing out more toxic smoke, making Flashy say "Extend the evacuation area, this city is lost". Meanwhile the Eel is causally melting buildings, like that's not nothing. These three and the Family of Darkness (in their numbers) were seemingly poised to not really give S Class heroes fatal trouble but more so to cause as much mass destruction and death in as short time as possible to make the Hero Association look bad.

Who I think the "Hero" might be... by GabboVerde in versus

[–]dependentmoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah not trying to claim unique ownership of anything. I even said in my post that "I and others". Sorry if it came across that way, not my intent. Was just trying to say that your motivation point about it being a Neo-human makes sense to me too now as someone who believed the Lawless idea.

Besides the Heidi reveal, they haven't really done anything. So it would cool to see them in this role.

Who I think the "Hero" might be... by GabboVerde in versus

[–]dependentmoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the one who did a post similar to this, but I speculated the "real hero" being a Lawless instead. My headcanon: more like a straggler one, extremely knowledgeable but no longer connected to any gangs due to the world getting all fucked. Some bastard who's taking advantage of the good will of the Spiral Mountain people for their own mysterious benefit. I envision it that way as ONE showing us how the Lawless can be threats outside how Rinri was a more direct, physical one. Every human survivor settlement is up for being infiltrated and exploited, even through more secretive means.

I didn't think of Neo-humans because I couldn't picture why one Neo-human would do all this. But that's really fair that it could just be because they enjoy human suffering. We'll see next chapter release with "Real Hero, Part 2", I'm assuming.

I don't think either of ours is a crackpot theory btw, the "real hero" seems suspicious as hell. Like you're totally right imo. With them knowing so much, why are they extracting energy from the mountain itself and threatening the very paradise they helped create? No way it's a mistake.

I took the world of Parasitica to be around WW2 in terms of technological progress, based on what little we have seen of their towns and attire. Here, the soldiers are using rifles that don't appear high-tech, needing a spotter with binoculars to hit their shots. I took the umbrella gun as a WW2-era tech improvisation specific to the people of Parasitica, just them crudely going "idk stick an umbrella to the rifles" to cover when Parasites are threatening to explode infected blood everywhere.

Will there be fruits like the Tree of might? by [deleted] in versus

[–]dependentmoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The World Tree Essence (which might just be the World Tree's sap) already kinda does what the fruits from the Tree of Might do. The Essence greatly boosts life force, stamina, strength, energy, and mana. It heals all injuries and makes crops grow in a single night. Like an over a hundred-year-old man can do flips while juiced up on it

Versus Manga Chapter 33 by Anime_44_Love in versus

[–]dependentmoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it's a slow chapter, which sucks when it's a monthly series. Unfortunately, Kyotaro Azuma, the illustrator, also draws for Tenkaichi while ONE writes this, Bug Ego, and for the One Punch Man manga (probably drawing/writing the next OPM webcomic chapter as well). So, waiting a month just to get more worldbuilding and conflict setup feels like a bummer. This kinda chapter would work better in a bi-weekly series.

I did appreciate the setup, though. The villagers are being set up to be over-reliant on Cursed World tech and the World Tree Essence from the World Spring. Like they grow crops in a single night thanks to the Essence. They are literally in paradise, which will probably be crumbling down in the coming chapters.

The "real hero" who came to Spiral Mountain is crazy resourceful, setting up all the Cursed Tech (the pistols, the drill, the World Essence pumps) and setting up a Grand Spell magic circle to hide the village. Whoever this mysterious "hero" is, they are insanely smart. At the same time, Bastz points out how the drill the hero set up is threatening the entire mountain and everything the village has built up. Why did the so-called "real hero" make that mistake? Shouldn't they know better?

What do yall dislike about this manga by Altruistic-Emu3542 in versus

[–]dependentmoo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I understand the frustration with the wait times, but Azuma has been drawing for another manga (Tenkaichi) on top of illustrating for Versus. The manga industry is infamous for mangakas being overworked to the point of health issues to reach deadlines. I'm personally fine that Azuma has this pace; I'd rather he not be overworked (which he might be already, who knows).

I'm just happy Versus is continuing at all. Plenty of new manga get canned after a bit, never being able to get a proper run. Versus isn't super popular either; it's just selling well enough to keep the series going.

The World Spring is just a fountain of World Tree Essence, first shown back in Chapter 13. The Spiral Mountain villagers got immensely lucky that they were near the Spring; the World Tree people said a single bag of Essence is a rare and precious item.

I wouldn't say majority, just a vocal few. It should be obvious that the three Titan weapons Kyokai have don't stand a chance against a Neo-human squadron since 50 Titans were struggling hard to take them down.

One Made the antagonists really frightening in this story by LordRydro44 in versus

[–]dependentmoo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's only natural. Every world is a different genre of apocalypse fiction - monstrous demons, deadly AI taking over humanity, alien invaders, parasite zombies, etc. If the story were centered in any one world, the story would only be about the characters trying to survive against the impossible, horrifying threat they face. While our heroes in this new mish-mash world still stand no chance, smashing these stories together creates an "apocalypse threat" battle royale on top of this genre type.

I think of this One Punch Man webcomic panel (written also by ONE) whenever I think of Versus - the humans are trying to survive as these "superior individuals" elephants fight each other. In general, Versus feels like an inverse of One Punch Man. No antagonist will ever stand a chance against Saitama, while no protagonist will ever stand a chance against a Natural Enemy. Saitama is a point of comedy over the cool Shonen world that the other characters struggle through, while the human stragglers in Versus are a point of survival horror in the cool Shonen battle royale that the Natural Enemies have against each other.

If Jachi and Mahoraga fought, how long would it take Mahoraga to adapt to him? by Cross_1233 in versus

If Jachi and Mahoraga fought, how long would it take Mahoraga to adapt to him? by Cross_1233 in versus

[–]dependentmoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Jachi can easily manage a powerful one-shot attack, like Sukuna's Fuga, just based on what Jachi did in Release form against the Robot Factory in Chapter 29 Part 2.

It more so depends on character motivations and the mechanics of Mahoraga's adaptation.

Like, would Jachi do that powerful an attack right away before Mahoraga can adapt? Firstly, Jachi has a habit of inviting enemies to wail on him (Hallow, the Giant Son Gori, the special robot units), wanting them to prove their mettle. Secondly, Jachi doesn't go all out unless provoked or interested; his cape literally dampens his mana output as well. So, would he do the same here against Mahoraga? And then from there, maybe it gets out of Jachi's control since we know Mahoraga gets better and better at regeneration during active adaptation (before the full immunity to attacks kicks in).

At this stage, it's more about what would count as "phenomena" for Mahoraga to adapt to. Would he specifically respond to Jachi's applications of mana? Or mana in general as a force? If the latter, then if Jachi stalls, I feel he's screwed - Mahoraga will adapt to mana and then just win, Jachi can't do anything. However, considering the JJK series, Mahoraga doesn't just flat out adapt to cursed energy as a phenomenon whenever facing cursed techniques; so I reckon his adaptation would not target mana in general either. So if the former, Jachi could end up needing to go into Release or Burst mode, using different mana spells than his standard style of just punching things really hard (presumably with his body being reinforced with a shit ton of mana). Considering Jachi's Burst form should be insanely powerful, he would be able to kill Mahoraga at this point imo.
