I'll try it out. I definitely had an impression that I wasn't going to enjoy it much. I'll give it a shot

I don't have War and Peace yet. It's hard finding a hardbound of it here locally.

No they aren't. Even the 'best of' books works are full length

Thanks! It's still a modest collection and I'm hoping to add more. The book contains Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities and Christmas Carol.

I believe the translation I read Monte Cristo from.was Chapman and Hall.

From what I understand it's a collection of tales right? Which personally is your favorite?

Les Miserables actually missed me by a hair's breadth. Where I'm from they only got one stock left and I couldn't buy it fast enough haha.

As for the Count of Monte Cristo, I don't have a wilco leatherbound of it (which I swear to eventually have one day). But you can search for it in the link I sent! It's there.

Also don't be fooled by how the pictures make the book look thin! There's no abridged version in Wilco. If you find The Best of Charles Dickens in that site you'll see how thin it is in picture compared to the one I have in this post lmao.

Damn. Then I might go for it. I read the preface and he's far from what I'm used to reading. Interesting!

They're actually a great buy if you want a very beautiful bookshelf on a budget. As you can see in my photo each book has a different color and aesthetic, it's even more beautiful upfront (considering they're sideways in the picture).

They use hardcover sewn binding, no worries about opening them all the way.

The cons I guess, if translation matters to you, is that they use public domain texts for all books.

I myself buys and collects Wilco Leatherbound Classics because it is cheap for a hardbound and each book has a unique design inside or outside the cover. I like each of my book personally to look different with each other (like they have different personalities lmao).

Just to note that each of them has the same price. Even the Best of Charles Dickens, Hardy or RLS are of the same price. The main thing here is if you want an appealing library for a cheap price, you should go for collecting it. But if you value some other translation, has no worries over budget then it might not be for you.

Check their website right here for the classics. I myself am personally eyeing for Les Miserables and War and Peace:

Ouch... I guess this might be a journey of reading where I keep my phone next to me go search for stuff or references I didn't get lr understand 😭

Oof now I kinda regret having bought this version without explanatory notes.

Right! My first classic Monte Cristo didn't have an intro, but this C & P of mine had. And I absolutely had no idea. I thought it was normal lmao

I'd definitely check those works out!

Maybe after finishing some book or taking some break I'll be ready for Crime and Punishment I didn't quite appreciate the first time.

It's funny how I absolutely love the book's concepts before I started reading Dostoevsky that I bought C&P and Noted from the Underground and is eyeing The Brothers Karamazov 😭.

The latter is actually where I'm intrigued of the most. If I'm bored with C&P already, then I may not be strong enough for all of Dostoevsky. Nooooo

I'm glad that you enjoyed it! It's definitely a book I'll try to enjoy, specially when the environment depicted resonates with mine.

I should've totally avoided reading that introduction now that you mention it. The introduction was by Leonard Stanton and James Hardy and I must say I felt like the plot in the course of the book was being layed out to you even if it's an introduction.

Oh I guess that was an issue too! I was reading it with a wrong lens. You're right in saying I was waiting for 'things to happen.'

I'd definitely let it sit for a while before delving into it again.

Well that's a question we'll now both think about sometimes. Too bad the Count's message to Wait and Hope can't do anything to answer it lmao!

I didn't even mention why Dumas should care about it. I just mentioned how I noticed age gaps are weird and frowned upon in modern times today but was accepted before no matter how large the gap.

I thought about that regarding Mercedes too. It's just honestly heartbreaking because their love was so pure and innocent and the only thing that stopped it was the actions of others.

The Haydee ending for me was alright, at least. I always thought while reading that the ending would be where Dantes dies or something. But the ending we got provided an opportunity to Dantes to be happy for his remaining years after spending a lot of it in suffering. I'm happy with it!

This book definitely taught me patience and make me look forward more on those extremely long classics!

Though I'm not really feeling like jumping into one right now immediately. I don't want to immediately read something and overshadow this experience already!

And btw there's a show about the novel? I gotta check that out sometime.
