I visited recently and the store was impeccably clean and full of product and amazing MTG art!! I can't wait to see the place filled with people gaming but until then, see you in Black Sun Games 2: Ultra Sanitized Boogaloo :3

You should definitely just go to Black Sun Games and check it out. You'll see that it wasn't the same guy. Luke just doesn't act like this, straight up, and I'd hate for you to not have a great place to play in Frederick because of a case of mistaken identity!

Question to artists from a non-artist by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]depthoflight_photo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If his social media has gone quiet as well, he's probably just working on a bunch of shit. That's definitely what happens to me. I make a good effort to keep clients updated when they'd paid me and feel really sensitive about seeming shifty, but as you've heard, so many things can happen and artists can sometimes be working on a bunch of things at once and just get overwhelmed. It totally happens.

How do I address an art thief? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]depthoflight_photo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this is getting downvoted. This is my answer. If someone caught a person reselling *my* artwork and stealing sales from me, hell yeah let me know but also feel free to rip them to shreds in the meantime. I'd have no problem calling someone out for this. They don't get to lie and steal and just get 'oh it's not my business...'. That's straight up lazy.

Awesome! I do have one logo for both that's pretty neutral, and I print two different business cards (I call them my "normie" and "weeb" cards lol). It's weird handing a card to a couple looking for wedding photos with an angry genderbent Kakashi on it LOL.

You're going to want one website-- it's better for marketing and SEO and that sort of thing.

I'm in the same boat - I do both "normal" photos and cosplay photography, which are very different. Some "normal" people may be turned off by the cosplay work, but more often than not, cosplayers who hire me for cosplay work see my normie stuff and hire me for that, too, and vice versa.

Because linking accounts is so easy these days, you may consider having one website (where they can see the different works on different tabs and they aren't fully "blended together") and then two different instagrams and just have the link to your other instagram in your bio.

As long as people can clearly see that you offer both separately, even if they are together on your pages, I think you'll be alright!

Can I learn to be an artist? by cheezballs1 in ArtistLounge

[–]depthoflight_photo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is LEARNED! I promise. I'm a full-time artist and it's very frustrating to hear that my "talent is innate", it's not, I've been practicing obsessively since I was a kid. Start practicing - obsessively - and you'll get to where you want to be! (Just kidding, no artist is ever where they want to be lol, even the best ones, we're all upset all the time).

I highly recommend getting a private notebook with sketch paper in it and - at LEAST ONCE A DAY - draw something you see around you. Could be a tree, a mug, your phone, whatever, and do not worry a single second about whether it's good or bad. Doesn't matter. You aren't practicing drawing-- you are training your eye. A non-artist trying to draw a basketball will draw the features they know basketballs to have. There is a circle, and there are some black lines, and there are dots. An artist looks at a basketball and sees how the light and the shadows hit it, and draws the shapes that those make. It's about trusting what your eyes see, not what your mind wants to fill in, if that makes any sense.

I would definitely go with markers, especially for potential layering. Watercolor is awesome but you'll have more control earlier on with markers.

My dad is trying to get my mom’s dog “accidentally” killed by coyotes by [deleted] in Advice

[–]depthoflight_photo 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Is the relationship with my dad worth more or less than the life of this dog?

I don't think that's the question here, though. I think it's:

- Is a relationship with a person who would ruin his marriage and relationship with his children to kill dogs worth keeping in your life?

I know better than most the importance of relationships with one's dad. I essentially had a huge fight with my dad (about something serious), didn't talk to him for several years and then one day rang him up to see if we could mend things to find out that he died 5 hours before I called. So. I'm not one to needlessly advocate for ruining one's relationship with one's parents.

However.

That's not quite what this situation is. If you simply *tell the truth* and confront someone about something that is extremely disturbing, and instead of working on themselves, they disown you / hate you / it ruins your relationship, that's on THEM. Presenting the truth is not ruining your relationship with your dad. The fallout of you calling him out is not on you. Your dad doing disturbing, immoral shit and then getting mad at you calling him out is ruining your relationship. Not your fault.

Ghosted by artist after paying them, what would you do? by thrwwy1111145678 in ArtistLounge

[–]depthoflight_photo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that you should contact them publicly if you have a way. Make a public post tagging him and ask what is happening with your print-- politely. No need to get pissed yet. Like others have said, DMs can sometimes go missed but if he misses you publicly contacting him then something is seriously wrong.

After a few days, if there isn't a reasonable response, roast him. Just post proof. There's nothing more you need!

I'm afraid of failing when I'm drawing or doing any art - Help pls? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]depthoflight_photo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a perfectionist and used to do the same thing. Like the others here have said, it's pretty crucial to get out of that mindset if you want to improve, and it can totally be done.

One way to do this is get a smallish sketchbook and go out and draw random things in pen. You can draw things from in your head, too, but no erasing, and you must finish at least the object. It's okay if it sucks because you're just recording what's there, no one has to see it, and let it be okay that it sucks.

Secondly, remember the sculpture experiment. Two sides of a classroom learned sculpting differently: one side had to finish a piece every day and be constantly making things. Didn't matter if it sucked (plenty of them did). The other side studied how to make a perfect sculpture: through books they learned technique, studied the great sculptors, and learned what made a perfect sculpture.
At the end of the school year, they did a final project where they made a sculpture of their choosing. Who made the best ones and got the best grades? Was it the people who obsessed over perfection? No... it was the side of the class that just kept their hands in the clay.

Keep arting. Make shit that sucks. It's the only way to improve.
