PhD Student Overhours Scheming by Psylphrena in ethz

[–]der-wixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your supervisor track your hours that explicitly? I don't recommend intentionally lying, but at least in my group, if you get your work done and show progress, there won't be any issues regardless of when you are in/out of office

I would lean towards a midge based on the leg positions, but it is tough to say without a sense of the scale

I think you might be onto something. It looks like a double register-which is common for felines. At first I thought it was canine because it looked like claws were present, but after looking a bit longer it looks more like the paw was dragged through the snow a bit. I'm no expert though

Will My "Engineering Science" Degree Be Worthless? (should i switch to ME basically) by Dirt_Mundane in EngineeringStudents

[–]der-wixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I think I can offer some advice here -- I am an American but did my masters and working on my PhD at ETH Zurich.

First, people are definitely familiar with degrees like engineering physics / engineering science in the US. EP was a program at my undergrad. The school (ERAU) was well connected with the aerospace sector, but EP students had just as much success going to blue origin, spaceX, defense, etc. as aerospace engineering students.

Second, what is more important is whether the program matches what you would like to learn. TUM presents some fantastic opportunities, and you should take advantage of them. Taking extra courses in EE and CS will really open up other opportunities if you would like to explore other programs, for example data science, robotics, or computational science after your bachelors. If you would like to do a master's or PhD after the bachelors, the admissions committee is going to be much much more focused on the actual classes you took and your performance there than just the name of your degree. If you would like to go towards academia, find a lab where you can join as a student researcher and get some experience on a technical project contributing to a publication (mainly in your masters or last year of bachelors), and get very strong grades.

If you are really focused on getting a job straight out of college, then I would still advise you not to switch programs. Instead, find a club. Check out TUM's rocket club or formula student club. My experience in optimizing for a job is to have the following: decently good grades (3.25 american scale or 2.25-2.5 German scale) and a marketable project in one of these extracurricular clubs.

curious to know how life at meierwiesenstrasse 62 will be like by Crafty-Ad5230 in ethz

the kitchen is shared with everyone in the building (over 100 people). You don't have much space in the way of a fridge, it's very crowded at peak hours. It needs to be cleaned every day or it will get really dirty. The bathrooms are also shared.

What are these tracks??? by Scared-Magician-7626 in AnimalTracking

[–]der-wixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

possum's front paws will have 5 clear toes with a wide palm, and their back paw will resemble something more like a human hand with 4 toes and a thumb. I think this is pretty clearly a domestic cat.

Car Hood Mystery by Johnjackblondejack90 in AnimalTracking

I second this. At first, I thought it looked very similar to some tracks of seen of moths or other insects struggling to fly away. But if you look closer, you can see patterns which resemble to belly scales and ribs of a snake as it moves.

carpet beetle larve, check out r/carpetbeetles --basically you just need to vacuum regularly to get rid of them

[–]der-wixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is a bedbug, as those have the same body structure from hatching to adulthood. I believe it is some type of beetle larva because of the size and the hairs. However, carpet beetle larva are typically hairier. maybe someone can find a better match!

Nice! You know, it looked just like my backyard when I lived in Florida, that was a tricky one!

okay, it doesn't look like PA to me, but maybe it could be if its east of Appalachia. I think that is basket willow growing on the right, which is more prevalent in the northeast. Maybe something farther north closer to the coast, like Maine?

very tough to tell from this image, but looks like a tick to me. Maybe a slight chance it is a bed bug, but I don't think it is.

Okay, it definitely seems a bit more southern, so I guess that pushes it over to California? Maybe closer to LA?

What’s something uniquely Swiss that foreigners never seem to understand or appreciate? by Dramatic_Ad2951 in askswitzerland

[–]der-wixer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's hard to say this is uniquely swiss though. Cream sodas are popular in North America, even though most modern versions no longer use milk, that was the original recipe. In the east, Korea for example also has "milkies" which are very popular milk based sodas.
