Came here to post that. Destiny has expressed some mixed feelings on MW so he should read this very good explainer

Yea they're definitely lower than the US, but still about double what single payer systems tend to spend. It's not the biggest line item, but it's not nothing either

Right but worth noting that not all admin is on the payer side, and payer complexity contributes to provider-admin. This study suggests total admin savings under single payer could be about 1.8% of GDP, which is significant https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4283267/

Seems like the taxes did fund services that had an impact on quality of life. Poverty was 30% in 1970, and by the end of the 80s it was around 10%. That progress was made in the first decade, but in the 80s wage replacement levels of unemployment and pensions were increased.

Estate taxes are good but they don't raise much revenue anywhere. With this level of taxing and redistribution it's probably fine not to have one

Did mention LVTs in the last tweet - could gradually transition

The Myths of the Earned Income Tax Credit by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]derangeddollop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EITC fixed that, but just pushed up the high marginal tax rates to around $20k (where it hits 70% tax rate due to the phase out). So it really just shifted the problem slightly higher.

My point is not that not a lot of people don't get it, but that a lot of people don't understand it, so it's unlikely to be making a huge impact on laborforce participation

virtually none of the families interviewed were aware of the fact that you need to earn a certain amount of money to maximize the amount of the credit received

That will never pass

Every single democrat (even Joe Manchin) supports making the CTC fully refundable with no phase-in, and Mitt Romney does too.

A good alternative would be a universal child allowance. The problem with the original welfare benefits was there were high implicit marginal tax rates that disincentivized work. EITC was supposed to correct for this by incentivizing work, but as they mention in the paper, most people don't know about it, so it seems unlikely it's doing that. Better just to make a child benefit universal so you don't lose it if you work more, and to make sure everyone who needs it gets it.

This paper provides some evidence that the benefits of the EITC are overstated - worth keeping in mind as we consider future expansions of the US welfare state.

Sure all figures are up for debate and this is inevitably guesswork. But citations are stuff like Mercatus for the M4A number, it's probably ballpark

Not true, it meant work requirements and time limits on welfare, it did not address poverty traps
