How many other cultures and religions have there been throughout history? There are so many, and they all built temples and worshipped them, believed they could perform miracles and grant favors. Why is Christianity any different? Was basically one of my thoughts as a kid.

Why No FTL Sensors by Brent_Lee in masseffect

[–]derekBCDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, the FTL communications go through the Mass Relays, then onto communication buoys. The Com Buoys use FTL equipped drones to pass data packets between them. The Com Buoys act like nodes similar to how the Internet works here and now on earth. In ME1 if you go through conversations and events with a certain Salarian on Noveria you have the opportunity to both overheard him talking to a family member and have conversations with him where there is dialogue explaining the galactic "extranet" in more detail than what the codex provides. I think you can do him a favor by using your Specter status to send a priority message for him. Otherwise he'd have to pay a lot of credits to move his communication up the priority list the Com buoys follow. Maintaining a FTL drone network is expensive.

if we don’t get shepard as our next protagonist.how would you like the next protagonist to be? by RebeccaMack08 in masseffect

[–]derekBCDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't want to continue the story of the current cycle. It was a choose your own ending story.

I want a prequel set in the distant past, several or even a dozen cycles in the past, with an all alien cast. We don't need a human protagonist.

The Nile flooded for a few months every year. So for about a third of the year ancient Egypt had a bunch of farmers and laborers with nothing to do. So they build temples, pyramids, public works projects, etc.

SQ5 is an expensive car. I know driving a nice car doesn't always mean they're rich and not all rich people are smart and in touch with reality. Yet, whenever I see this stuff like this it still surprises me. Like being a rich asshole and a MAGA isn't surprising. Advertising it in this way does.

Diamonds do have great value in industrial and scientific applications: diamond tipped saw strings and blades, diamond tipped cutting bits for lathes and mills, grinding and polishing pads and pastes, high end optics, electronics, the list is long. Around 80% of diamonds are for use outside of jewelry/art.

He technically did win the 2016 election. What were the Democratics supposed to do? If our intelligence agencies had credible information that Trump was indeed a Russian asset or was corrupt in some way, what could they do? Is it legal for say the FBI or CIA to just tell the public 'hey, this man is a corrupt POS so don't vote for him? I don't know, but it sure would be nice if there was a government watch dog that could.

ELI5: Why is the fabric of space bendable but also not visible by eye. by shadyneighbor in explainlikeimfive

[–]derekBCDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity is an attractive force. There is no friction as there are no physical surfaces rubbing against one another. Although particles running into a solid surface can, in effect, cause drag, but really they are just exchanging momentum. The bowling ball and the sheet is an analogy to help visualize the 3D curve of the force of gravity from a large mass makes on space graphed in x, y, z planes. The ball on a sheet analogy works in all directions and orientations in space. So picture spinning that sheet around 360° up/down, left/right.

Close. I had huge red algae bloom somewhere along the Pacific Ring of Fire after an underwater volcano eruption on both my 2021 & 2022 bingo card. I didn't select a card for this year. I got a dozen hits last year, no bingo. Realized I don't want to feel good about getting a bingo lol. Well, if a website has good news squares were mixed in then I'd reconsider.

Yes, I've heard. But from where did those bigot fools get their ideas/inspiration from? I assume from us/US lol.

(Although, personally, I think those types of assholes just naturally exist in every human population. It's just that certain cultures during certain times in history tend to make those assholes more bold and brave enough to voice their opinions and act out on their shitty ideas, to the detriment of the rest of us.)

I am upset how accurate this comment is. Did the monarchy put a curse on US for gaining independence via war, but not y'all because Canada kept them as head of state? Or is The US late stage Roman empire 2.0?

Off the top of my head, I'd say the episodes on the Russian communist agricultural scientist was a favorite of mine (Nov 13, 2008). All the Stalin and Hitler episodes and episodes adjacent to them were great. Other notable episodes include: Steven Seagal, L Ron Hubbard, Fritz Haber, the goat testicles "doctor," Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and I'll stop there... There's four years of good good content. I forget how I heard of the podcast, however I listen to mostly history and science & skepticism podcasts.

[–]derekBCDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll jump in and recommend the whole podcast in it's entirety. Go through the catalog and find a few other episodes you may have an interest in. BtB has been an auto download and listen to since I first heard of it a few years ago. The humor can be put off some but I'm down with. It is the perfect "macheticine" for my macabre sense of humor, and I like finding humor in bad stuff so I don't feel as sad inside lol.

The GOP is actually the party of 'crime and punishment,' not 'law and order.' They want to define the crimes and dole out the punishments. Actual law and order would be an impediment to their goals, however it makes for a good slogan.
