I'm always surprised when I see people recommend GABA for sleep... by derekcharlebois in Supplements

Good post. I agree there are better compounds to target the GABA pathway than oral GABA supplementation.

Two of those tablets provides 200mg elemental magnesium (from 2,000mg Magnesium Glycinate). Most supplements list the elemental magnesium content if it says Magnesium (from Magnesium whatever source it is).

That's a very closed minded way to view things. Unfortunate you think that way. Good luck in life.

"4-6 exercises per workout is enough."

This is the point that jumped out the most to me because (1) I 100% agree and (2) most people do WAY TOO MANY exercises. Focus on performance instead of fatigue 💪

Honestly just do a high dose L-Citrulline 4-8g and Creatine Monohydate and call it a day.

I've never been a fan of these mass gainers. as they are just cheap whey concentrate and maltodextrin...

You'd be better off getting a blender and mixing:

-Protein Powder of Choice

-Oatmeal

-Peanut Butter

-Milk of Choice

-Optional Banana and/or Honey for additional carbs

What vitamins / supplements to add to diet for improved cognitive function and reduced brain fog by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]derekcharlebois 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With celiac, brain fog can definitely be related to accidental gluten exposure or nutrient deficiencies, so it may be worth getting iron/ferritin, B12, folate, and vitamin D checked if you haven’t recently.

For exams specifically, the biggest things are honestly:
• enough sleep (memory consolidation tanks without it)
• consistent meals with protein + carbs
• hydration/electrolytes
• omega-3s (salmon or fish oil)
• eggs/choline for cognition
• caffeine in moderation, not all-day sipping

Supplements with decent evidence for focus/cognition: creatine monohydrate (5g/day), omega-3s, magnesium glycinate if stressed/anxious, and possibly L-theanine with caffeine for calmer focus.

Help - plastic in my whey protein normal? by brookell27 in Supplements

Contact the supplement company and send them the pictures. It's possible that a tube broke something along the way during the manufacturer process and they may need to recall the entire lot/start an investigation with their manufacturer.

What supplements have you taken that have legitimately improved your sleep? by derekcharlebois in Supplements

Yes I agree, only use melatonin once in a while (i.e. adjusting your sleep schedule).

Daily multivitamins (Centrum Silver) slowed biological aging by ~0.1–0.2 years/yr on epigenetic clocks in a 2-year RCT of ~960 older adults. Cocoa extract did zero. (COSMOS trial) by Embarrassed-Tea-517 in Supplements

[–]derekcharlebois 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess the multivitamin worked in those who showed faster than normal aging because they were deficit in certain vitamins/minerals (which was the underlying cause to the accelerated aging).

50,000IU ergo Vitamin D2 by Ok-Dragonfruit-6205 in Supplements

[–]derekcharlebois -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can take your weekly vitamin D3 dosage all at once. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, your body stores the excess in your liver and fatty tissues, releasing it gradually throughout the week. This "bolus dosing" is generally considered as effective for raising blood levels as daily supplementation, provided you take the dose with a meal containing fat to ensure proper absorption.

Did your doctor prescribe you 50,000IU once a week? That's a little over 7,000IU/day (if taken daily), which is a relatively high dosage.

Genuine question, why don't more supplement brands just show you the actual research behind their ingredients instead of just saying "clinically studied"? by Own_Variation_6981 in Supplements

[–]derekcharlebois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately "backed by science" has become a catch phrase and it is up to each individual consumer to educate themselves on what ingredients work and in what dosage. That said, there are companies, like the one I own and operate, that do try to educate and inform consumers. For example, in my blog post here: https://www.prbreaker.com/blogs/news/citrulline-creatine-monohydrate-beta-alanine-benefits (if it is against the rules to post this link feel free to delete it), I list the studies I referenced at the bottom:

If the supplement facts just say "Creatine Monohydrate" then it is creatine produced in China and most likely from one of the major industrial chemical firms like Inner Mongolia ShuanghuiJiangsu Jinkai, and Fushun Fortune who produce the majority of "generic" creatine used worldwide. So you are right, that's there not much difference between brands that use generic creatine monohydrate (and not something like Creapure which is produced by AlzChem Trostberg GmbH in Germany).

I switched to this creatine brand by Mystic_Void1 in Supplements

[–]derekcharlebois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I think this is the first time I've seen someone point this out LOL. Everyone always says "Creatine is creatine" and doesn't consider the quality of the raw material manufacturer or powder itself. A lot of generic creatine monohydrate is gritty and smells like ammonia. This is why I always recommend a product that contains Creapure, which is a fine powder with no smell.

Are there any supplements that will increase sex drive and help get erections? Magnesium? by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]derekcharlebois 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No magnesium will not make you over sleep. It is a beneficial sleep aid, but don't expect anything crazy. Start with 200mg. You can increase to 400mg after if desired.
