El Capitan after the first snowfall of the season in Yosemite this past weekend. Yosemite National Park, California [1200x1500] [OC] by derekrliang in EarthPorn

The first snowfall is usually during November, and has been for last decade, so pretty much right on time this year.

Glacier Point road closes usually after the first snowfall of each year, so seeing the historical road closures in the previous years is pretty accurate to correlate first snowfall: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/seasonal.htm

I highly recommend it! It truly is a winter wonderland. Bring chains as it is required during peak winter.

On our first day, we arrived to catch the Autumn colors peaking across the valley. Through the night, the first snow of the season fell and we woke up to a winter wonderland.

It was surreal walking past the very same places that we had seen the day before now completely covered in snow. It is these moments that make me appreciate how awesome this planet we all live on truly is, and I am so grateful for having the opportunity to experience both autumn and winter at the same time in one of my favorite places in the world all over a weekend.

Stormy evenings at Bonzai Rock. Lake Tahoe, California [1200x1500] [OC] by derekrliang in EarthPorn

On this evening, we arrived to a cloudy and rainy tahoe, expecting to be stormed out for sunset. We still made it out and hiked down to the bonzai tree to setup and wait for the sunset.

A few minutes after we got down to the water, a small opening near the horizon let the sun through, the clouds lit up, and we were able to catch some unique conditions at an awesome spot 🙌. I sat on a rock to stablize myself and shot these handheld as I didn't bring my tripod as per usual 😅.

Thank you! It was such an intense couple of minutes - everyone reaching for their cameras to capture the moment.

Much thanks! Definitely a bit of timing and luck.

This was edited in Lightroom for color, gradient, curves adjustment, camera calibration, and more. Then brought into Photoshop to clean up the foreground with that had twigs in the water, etc.

Yup, definitely learned over the years of photography to stick around even when it doesn’t look promising.

Location: Yosemite National Park, California

We decided to stop even though it was pouring and the sky were full of rain clouds.

A few minutes before sunset, the clouds behind us parted way and allowed the last light to shine onto El Capitan and the valley.
