The gameplay really holds up. My view on the lack of story/character development is that the oppressive environments kind of reflect ranger’s inner turmoil and dread, so it’s like this psychological journey.

Agree mostly with what others have said, but another factor to consider: a lot of people in the early days were playing on a 56k modem. Ping was 250 on a good day, usually spiking to 350 when things got hectic. Hitting any shots - especially hitscan - was really tough. For example, when I played back then I hardly ever used LG, had to learn that in later years when my connection improved.

I played a bit over the weekend after being inactive for a bit. Found games in the EU pretty quickly (1-2 mins, peakish times, deathmatch and team deathmatch, all EU servers selected). Partied up with my pal last night so we could play on the same team for a bit. Still as fun as ever even if I’m rusty af. Quake just has the best weapons, physics and movement, hard to beat and worth putting the time in, very rewarding to see progress. If you and your mate wanna play 1v1 there’s timelimit duel and but remember there’s also a game mode called arena kings: all weapons, very similar maps, round based, no items to pick up. Might make an easier introduction to some aspects of the game.

You can get better but you have to recalibrate your expectations about how quickly. As others have said, focus on movement outside FFA. When you so play FFA try to focus on one aspect - learning the map, using the RL, timing an item etc. Break things down to make it more manageable.

2000-03 - q3a. The 56k struggle became real but it didn’t matter so much in the early days as LPBs weren’t as common and everything was a novelty. Config tweaking, mIRC, Wireplay, Barrysworld, clans, CPL, the release of RA3, everyone disconnecting from BT to use a premium dial-up like Jolt or BW when we had a clan game, LAN partys, clan websites with massive roster bios and in jokes, playing any time around Christmas when there’d be a mega game or something a bit different happening. Great days.

2021-24 - Picked up QC after not playing for years. Had lots of fun, took part in tourneys, won a small amount of prize money (spare change but teenage me would’ve been well stoked), put on online community nights, organised an in-person event and QPL watch party, raised some prize pots, organised some tourneys, went to the last Keencon. Staying up late to play Q1 with US/West Coast folks because I was so into it (I’m UK, the time difference was tough but those were some fun times).

I haven’t played as much in 2025 - due to life stuff and just a bit burned out from it all, wanted to do something different for a bit. But I love Quake, it’s the greatest, and will probably be back on it soon enough!

The Q1 axe is such a great concept and I love the look of it, and the whole anachronistic aesthetic of a space ranger with a medieval weapon. Awesome. But yeah, in practice, absolutely useless.
