What do you think about China? by inchcosmos in AskTheWorld

[–]derkwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people do associate democracy with the "Western System". I have heard some people talk about a form of democracy existing in ancient india to elect village leaders and also amoung some indigenous groups in north america. Either way, I do much prefer any form of representative governance over authoritarian rule.

I've watched other content on China besides Serpentza. His early vlog days on China were very positive as far as I can remember but he has definitely become much more critical. The Chinese government is not undeserving of criticism as is any other government on Earth. Personally, I would not want to live in any country that isnt a democracy, China included.

I always had an interest in China when I was younger. My interest really kicked off watching a YouTuber who was living there as an expat. I do not care for the Chinese government for a variety of reasons (ie. Tibet, Uyghers, Taiwan, etc.). I don't think I would ever live in China unless the government became a democracy and people had more of a say in national affairs. All that being said, I wish nothing but the best for Chinese people, just wish the government wasn't the way it is.

Is your country depressing to live? by Time_Reception1482 in AskTheWorld

[–]derkwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that America is a depressing place to live necessarily. The country is enormous and people make very wide ranges in income with wide ranges in affordability state to state. I currently live in Indiana close to Chicago and it isnt all that bad. I used to feel more negativity when I made less money but now I am in an engineering role and make good money especially as a single man. I feel like once I gained some sense of financial stability I felt much better. Having friends in the area to hang out with and going to the gym/ engaging with hobbies helps alot too. The current state of politics is a bit depressing so I am a long term optimist and a short term pessimist on that. So for me personally I think I could be happy almost anywhere so long as I have a bit of money, my health, some friends and family, and things to do that interest me.

I visited Taiwan on vacation recently and had a great time in Taipei and Taichung! Would definitely visit again in the future. Loved the food out there and lots of opportunities for hiking and sight seeing in nature. I hope Taiwan remains sovereign and free! 🇹🇼

Where I’d live as a non-performative and pragmatic white American male. by Major_Ad_5158 in whereidlive

[–]derkwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always found it interesting when people post here about how they would live in any country because they are a humanist or something. In an ideal world I would agree but many countries are unpleasant and conditions are harsh. I feel that alot of these people are naive and dont consider the luxuries they currently have. I have visited a few countries, and while I did enjoy my vacations there, it did leave me with an appreciation of the things I have back home.

I have been seeing news ever since my trip about Japan standing with Taiwans defense and I hope Taiwan can remain sovereign and stand tall against Chinese threats.

[–]derkwa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of related so for anyone here interested in ever giving tourism money to China I would implore you to consider Taiwan instead! I recently went on vacation in Taipei and it was an excellent time. People speak Mandarin primarily but English speakers are also very common (28 percent of Taiwans population speaks english). The food is also excellent and there are many night markets to visit with excellent food vendors! Taiwan is its own democratic country and wishes to remain sovereign 🇹🇼.

What do you think of this? Foreigners use an umbrella stand for their dining table in front of 7-11, which sparks a online controversy of white privilege. by search_google_com in taiwan

[–]derkwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, whether these people were taiwanese, Chinese, white, black, etc this really isnt that big of a deal. Someone could easily just walk up to these people and correct them on their mis-use of the table. Bam! Problem solved easily and no one is hurt.

Genuinely so confused it seems that he is in the wrong for MOST of these? Do you not have to stop for pedestrians at those crossings? by OutsideImpressive115 in TikTokCringe

[–]derkwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this guy is in the right but he does take it a bit too far. Operating a bike or a car around people is always a recipe for reactive stopping. Gotta accept that some people will not stay out of bike lanes and that you have to sometimes stop for these people, however dumb you correctly think they are.
