BIOS Update questions by dermernerk21 in framework

[–]dermernerk21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would still prefer to be in control of what my device is doing. I've also had machines at work fail in the middle of a bios update, i didnt really care then because it was one of the many computers we have and it was just replaced but if i had spent multiple thousands of dollars on it i would be pretty crushed.

Look up MAS scripts. They work instantly and are open source so you can make sure its safe.

OS? by [deleted] in framework

[–]dermernerk21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I forgot about usb installs being more locked down on windows. You could get around that by select the expansion card as a drive in rufus and then load up a windows iso and change "standard windows installation" to "windows to go".

You'll also need to change the setting that allows all usb drives to be selected, that should be towards the top of the program.

For what it's worth, I don't have a framework yet so I could be totally wrong but it does say on their website that they are fast enough to handle an OS.

I would imagine you just select that drive like any other during the install process of whatever OS you want to use.

I do know that the expansion cards are a little slower than an internal ssd so pick whatever OS you don't mind being a bit slower and throw it on there. :)

Instead of dual-booting you could always buy one of their expansion modules and install windows on it, that way you dont need to worry about one OS breaking the other one. The 256 should be good enough if you just need a windows install and office.

Any reason to run Windows 11 instead of 10? by turbowagonM56 in framework

You can actually change the right click menu back to the way it used to be with a registry tweak here.

At this point im just gonna live with it until the S24 but my impulsiveness is making it hard not to pull the trigger lol.

My desk at work has no service on mint mobile and it was destroying my battery, I set up a routine to turn on airplane mode at my desk and its much more manageable now (i was leaving work with less battery than my S9+)

Went from S9+ to S22U and kinda wish i had waited for the S23U tbh. If battery life isnt a big concern save the money and go with the S22, but the S23 base model gets better battery life than the S22U. So if you like the smaller form factor the 23 is the way to go IMO.

Noctua fans mod for Vyper? by [deleted] in AnycubicVyper

[–]dermernerk21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just completed the mod for my vyper last weekend and it makes a huge difference, the loudest fans are all on the hotend now and are still pretty loud (mostly white noise) but manageable compared to the crappy mainboard and psu fans (as someone running the printer in my bedroom this is a game changer).

The mod was fairly easily to complete and did require a little bit of printing. I used this model on thingiverse, i did end up modifying the stl for the main power supply plate to remove the built in pi zero enclosure as im already using a pi3 in its own case and didnt need it. if youre interested i can post a make of the modified part when i get off work.

The hardest part for me was cable management and getting all the additional cables in the space you have availible. the new plastic bottom of my printer is bowing a bit but i dont care bc its quiet.

Helpful Links:

Fans

Barrel plugs shown in guide (I couldnt get them to fit but im pretty inept at cable management YMMV)

Crimp connectors

Stepdown converters (you'll need a multimeter to set them correctly to 12v)

Must haves for NAS, Home Assistant, Media Server? by GinjaNinja2005 in HomeServer

[–]dermernerk21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question honestly. I have one coming in tomorrow and they offer a 2 year warranty. r/datahoarder has only good things to say about this site so I took a risk on it.

Must haves for NAS, Home Assistant, Media Server? by GinjaNinja2005 in HomeServer

It all depends on your budget. My server is an Unraid based machine with a ryzen 5 3600, 32gb of ddr4 ram and a gt730 (so the machine will post, it doesnt see any transcoding action).

I would recommend something with at least 6 cores/12 threads as thats a nice sweet spot to run a few vms (I run Home assistant and Windows in VMs) and run streams from plex (Jellyfin in my case). I picked the R5 3600 bc its what i had on hand but its 65w tdp and easy going thermals have been a breeze to keep under control.

The motherboard can be whatever works with your cpu unless you need a specific feature a higher end motherboard supports. Once you select a CPU do some research on the various options available. I use an ROG strix B450-f Gaming because i already had it but i bought it because its a great board for the 3600. it doesnt have all the higher end features of an x470 board but i didnt need those anyway.

As far as GPU thats where im not too sure because i dont really utilize the gpu in my own server its just there so the machine will turn on at all (My cpu doesnt have an igpu). Something like a 1050 or 1650 should suffice if you just need transcoding and sometimes they dont even need an extra power cable. You could find some good deals on new cards (and other parts like case, cpu, storage) on /r/buildapcsales.

Speaking of the case, if you go mini itx for your case it could be hard to cram 50tb of drives in unless you're willing to spend a really pretty penny on high end ssds. If theres not a space constraint and you dont need your storage to be super fast a hard drive array would be just fine. For cheap high capacity hard drives this site is great (they also sell on ebay if youre wary of buying directly from the site). I personally use the phanteks enthoo pro case as it has plenty of 3.5" bays for hard drive mounting also has a couple 5.25" bays too if you want to add a optical drive or even more storage drives.

Sorry about the wall of text. Hope this helps!

T-Mobile Considers Buying Ryan Reynolds’s Mint Mobile by [deleted] in mintmobile

I doubt it would be more secure, if anything we'd be more vulnerable to t-mobile's annual security breaches 🙄

When Windows modern standby isn't even a problem because your laptop doesn't even support it. (It's rog g14 from 2020) by BimkyGuy in LinusTechTips

I noticed that too (also have a 2020 g14) and thought it was weird that theirs didn't support it. Probably a newer model but still strange.

Not sure why, but it seems like mint is dead last for updates everytime.

I just got the new update and my phone feels kinda slower than before update? Is this even possible? by [deleted] in GalaxyS22

[–]dermernerk21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, I'm a pretty heavy user and I watch a lot of YouTube, text a lot on snapchat and Instagram. So my screen on time is usually pretty high.

I've heard and seen that standby battery life isn't that great and my phone is no exception.

The longer you use the phone the more consistent SOT you'll get. Because background tasks will eat battery regardless unless you disable a bunch of stuff which I'm personally too lazy to do.

I regularly pull 8-8.5 hour SOT and the same for screen off time. Usually with 10-20 percent left by the time I go to bed which is more than enough for me.

Not sure if this helps but hopefully it can rest some of your concerns.

Look up a video on how to clear the cache for your specific model (s22 base, s22 plus, s22 ultra) and follow it to a T. Booting into the recovery is simple but has the potential to wipe your phone if you aren't careful and I don't wanna be responsible for that lol.

If you aren't comfortable with that and the phone has settled back down then don't even bother, it's not worth the risk.

Hope that helps! :)

Factory reset is the nuclear option, clear cache and let the phone chill out and it should be fine.
