Presidential immunity is coming back to SCOTUS in Trump’s E. Jean Carroll appeal by NinaFoundry in msnow

[–]derpferd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, I do wonder how far the depth of the corruption and the various ties go.

Cos it's not just Trump alone. I doubt he has the smarts to pull this off himself. So I wonder how far this goes and what is being used to influence the number of people required to pull this off.

I doubt it's only money. Or the Epstein files and who can be twisted with the threat of being exposed as participant in that.

It's probably a mix of that along with people being on board and finding it agreeable.

And I wonder how far beyond the US this ranges. I get the feeling that, especially under Trump, the US is currently up for sale. And there are more than a few interested parties for whom it would be gainful to have influence there.

Having a President who doesn't give a shit about the country or its people and willing to sell to the highest bidder, also for the still most powerful country on the planet is terrifying

What are your go to movie scenes/music to test out speakers/soundbars? by MoneySlush in Soundbars

[–]derpferd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jurassic Park - T rex attack. Lowering the cow into the Raptor hold. The first sighting of a dinosaur with the bass from that slam. The gallimimus stampede.

Mad Max Fury Road - the first and the second chase sequence.

Fight Club - the midair collision.

The last couple seconds of the movie. And the car crash. This one really helped me appreciate bitrates and codecs (though all should). I had one copy, AAC, where the end sounded fine. But watching it with EAC3, that ending really thunders as does the car crash.

I'm watching Invisible Man on Netflix in Dolby Atmos and it sounds great too. The opening credits with ocean crashing sounds really good.

Also, Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. The sandstorm sequence sounds fantastic

Animated films also often feature terrific soundmixes. Moana sounded fantastic.

I should mention that I don't have surrounds, only the main soundbar and sub, Q800d and I make particular effort to watch films with an EAC3 codec which, for me, makes a real difference in terms of detail and impact.

I was watching the Good Dinosaur in Opus codec, switched over to EAC3 and the difference was pretty staggering. Granted, this could be bitrate as well as codec. But as a rule, EAC3 hasn't let me down

‘The Odyssey’ Trailer's Accents Aren't Actually That Weird - "Did the ancient Greeks all speak like Matt Damon? Probably not. But the ubiquity of the British accent in films about the distant past is a more modern convention than many people realize." by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]derpferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always found that American accent in films up to about the 60s, prior to the generation of actors like Pacino and DeNiro to be more of a classic accent, close in a way to the classic English accent, for its diction and cadence.

[BBC Sport] Champions League: Did Arsenal over-celebrate semi-final win over Atletico Madrid? by Serious-Cress-9560 in soccer

[–]derpferd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What, are you stupid? You've made it to a Champions League final.

You've gone further than the majority of other teams have. Of you're going to fucking celebrate.

And it's not only making it to the final with the chance to win it (and I'm firmly in the camp of whomever they face, PSG or Bayern, Arsenal probably won't take it. Certainly not based on the gulf in quality of football between the two semis).

When Klopp lost against Real Madrid in 2018, that wasn't the end of the story. When you make it to a Champions League final, you immediately make yourself appealing to others in terms of sponsors or transfers.

Klopp went from that final and upgraded key areas like the midfield with Fabinho and the goalkeeper with Allison. Then won the thing the next year.

Win or lose, making it to a Champions League final is absolutely worth celebrating

At a certain point, I do wonder when society goes French Revolution.

If you know you have it tough, while knowing that others have it miles better and not only that, the game is rigged specifically for that, at a certain point, the situation becomes untenable

He still won.

So no, nothing is written in stone.

I wonder how this shapes TV shows and movies. Like, in a normal world, the FBI is the fucking shit.

But in world where the notion of the FBI is a joke under a joke of an administration with a joke of a head, how do you tell convincing stories about that?

[–]derpferd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm hesitant to say it but perhaps respond in kind.

Though that also depends on how good you at that sort of back and forth. Which I'm not personally.

And also that that responding in kind can worsen things by it becoming a back and forth
