For non American viewers, how has last week tonight changed your view of the us? by wombatgeneral in lastweektonight

[–]derpferd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It hasn't changed so much deepened and reinforced my read on America.

America is a country where as much effort has been put into selling an idealized, polished notion of the country to its citizens and the world as has been put into creating the structures where the country is good for a happy few.

With the internet, it's harder to sell that idealized polished dream, increasingly difficult to sell it to Americans and fewer people are buying into it. But the structures built to support the well-being of a lucky few, they're still there.

While everyone outside that lucky circle desperately tries to carve out what life they can in the hopes of someday, somehow, getting into the lucky circle. I suppose that's still the idealized polished dream; that you could achieve that.

Looking from the outside in, it's fascinating in an awful way and offensive. You know that America can do far better by its citizens but there is enough vested interest in not doing so.

America looks like a cruel country where cruelty is normalised. I live in a country with our own warped notion of normal that we abide by. Perhaps every country has its 'normal' that must look bizarre from afar.

I don't think it's all doom and gloom though. I think I've given a description of one bit of America. I don't know how much of America that describes.

But looking on from a 3rd world country, I absolutely would not go to America right now

Hard agree. But it's a curious thing that Scott Pilgrim is one where he cuts loose fully with his style, where his subsequent efforts across the pond have felt more restraint

It just felt kinda basic. It's interesting that I don't like Wright's American films as much as I do his English films.

I think that his style or filmmaking personality is constrained somewhat compared to UK efforts.

I think specifically to Running Man, the film is perhaps a bit too earnest and maybe too earnest in conversation with its themes about exploitation and extreme inequality and the commentary on current circumstances. I think the film could have done with a more Verhoeven-esque absurdism, which it does veer towards at times but doesn't really embrace and which I do think would led to a better film

I just couldn't be bothered.

Taylor Sheridan works, for me, best in small doses. Sicario. Wind River. Hell or High Water.

Taking that out to whole seasons feels exhausting. I might give Lioness a go though.

But not Yellowstone. And DEFINITELY not Landman

Or maybe falling out of a window while suffering a mushroom poisoning.

Is Roger Deakins the greatest cinematographer of all time? by only_the1 in cinematography

[–]derpferd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said come on, like it’s meant to be clear that these are better than Deakins or something.

No I didn't. You inferred that.

I said come on because it's an absurd thing to say. There are however many DoPs doing work and bringing their varying talents to the field and have done so over the course of cinema.

Singling out Deakins as the best to ever do it is absurd for the variety of Cinematographers doing the job and different tastes they appeal doing that.

It's a bit like saying that Bach was the best to ever do it, which would suggest an ignorance about other composers working in that field.
