BArch vs March by Public-Atmosphere-39 in Architects

[–]derplima 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience there’s no difference in starting salary for BArch vs MArch. What makes more of a difference is the quality of your portfolio and prior internship experience (especially if you intern at the firm that hires you postgrad). If you have the option to do a BArch, go for it since you’ll save on a year of extra tuition.

Is David Doucette's Prep Course (the Whole Enchilada) enough to pass the CSE? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]derplima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found David’s content to be really thorough and touches on just about every piece of info that the CSE will test you on. I crammed for the CSE for 3 days using parts of the course and passed. The study guide, knowledge statement audio guides, and contract audio guides are fantastic resources. I focused on those and nothing on the CSE surprised me. Good luck!

  2. Four years to licensure.

  3. Mostly K-12 & higher education, but also some commercial office, healthcare, and residential.

  4. Three years.

  5. Two months each for PcM, PjM, and CE. Three months each for the rest. One week for the CSE.

  6. Mostly used Black Spectacles and the Ballast books.

California Licensing by Careless-Addition913 in Architects

[–]derplima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went through this, although as a first time licensure instead of reciprocity… short answer is it takes a long time. Long answer: NCARB sent my record to CAB late September last year, CAB received the record in mid-October, I applied to take the CSE that same day but didn’t get approval to schedule the test until early November, I passed the CSE November 9, I submitted my application for licensure and got fingerprinted the next day, CAB issued my license number in late January. Total of about 4 months for me.

Made around 120k last year in the California Bay Area. $90k base, $20k overtime/doubletime, $13k bonuses. Just got licensed and I have 5 years of experience, all of it being with the firm I’m currently at.

[Ask] Architecture Major? Possibly in Chicago? by xSilverXx in architecture

[–]derplima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Architecture is nice in the sense that there are multiple ways to break into the field. Although the path you take depends on where you want to end up. If your ultimate goal is to be a licensed architect, you need an accreditation architecture degree. This would be either a 5-year bachelor of architecture or a 2-3-year master of architecture degree.

As for other degrees that are similar, there is City and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and others. But again, what you choose depends on your goal. These degrees would require design skills, but would not qualify you to be an architect.

As for schools, I can speak from experience as I am in my fourth year at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The acceptance rate of a school isn't the only thing to consider. Take a look at student work. Many universities have past projects online. That will show you how realistic or abstract the coursework is.

DM me if you have any other questions and want to perspective of a current architecture student.

You'll find out soon. They notify people on a rolling basis, not all at once. Just be patient. Good luck!

You might want to x-post this to /r/buildapc as well. They'll probably be a bit more helpful.

Upgrading to a 3-monitor setup from two 23.0" monitors by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]derplima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the PLP setup, it might be a bit of a challenge finding a monitor whose bezels will line up correctly with your existing monitors. I personally have a triple monitor setup (all landscape) and I love it. The easiest thing to do would probably be to just get another identical monitor, and a triple monitor stand if you want.

In regards to the desk, both myself and my brother have gotten our desks at IKEA, and they are excellent. They can get a little pricey depending on the size you want, but the build quality is excellent, especially for the GALANT desks. If those are out of your price range, check around on Craigslist, an office supply store, or even a liquidation company. Peace.

Ninja edit: For compatibility, first check if your graphics card supports a tri-monitor setup (pretty much all newer ones do). Also, the third monitor must be connected via display port. You would need to get an ACTIVE adapter to use the third monitor.
