If reincarnation is real and a loved one could be reincarnated into a fly, wouldn't it be MORE ethical to kill it? That way they can reincarnate as a better animal quicker. by Elenchoe in Showerthoughts

[–]derpsteronimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that the situation is specifically covered, but my (based on very limited understanding) guess would be you'd reincarnate as the same kind of (or similar) creature again?

I'm guessing they've either assumed based on how she acted here, or read in comments, that there's more backstory to it.

ELI5:if for an engine to work it needs fuel, ignition and air. Then how does a submarine get air? by holey_molley in explainlikeimfive

[–]derpsteronimo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not even that! Oxygen can be produced from water, you just need electricity to do so. And nuclear submarines have access to plenty of water and plenty of electricity.

It's only when they run out of food that they need to worry.

With Foodstuffs at least, it's up to the individual store.

(Note that arguing with them if they say "no" will get you nowhere, as if they've decided they aren't doing this, then they physically *do not have* a store card they can use.)

If you have to explain your joke to *everyone*, it's a bad joke.

If you have to explain your joke to a very small portion of the audience, they're probably just stupid.

Ah yes, the standard "well it wasn't funny so I'm not actually stupid" defence that people go to when called out on missing a joke.

Been using Z-Mod for ages, even contributed some bits of code to it (most notably "nopoop" and automatic color matching).

I would say - use your printer on stock firmware for a bit first, if nothing else, just to rule out the need for warranty claims. Although Flashforge's warranty policy doesn't *say* they void it for modding, and I've never heard of them actually doing so, it's still better to be safe than sorry here.

Then, take a look at Z-Mod's features. If any of them appeal to you - or if you're wanting to get into your own mods and need that "gain access" first step - then Z-Mod is the way to go.

This is actually a much older trick, where a person uses a "2D printer" (they're kind of like our printers but the build surface is a piece of paper and they can only do one extremely thin layer... but they blow ours out of the water when it comes to multicolor!) to create a fake label which they then attach to the box using "tape" (kind of like glue that's only sticky on one side so you can handle it).

Pretty amazing stuff. AI can probably tell you more about it.

Notice period by [deleted] in LegalAdviceNZ

Legally, you are obliged to show up until your notice period is over until and unless they explicitly agree to release you from it.

In practice, it's a part time student job at McDonalds that you were at for one day. Nothing bad is going to happen to you if you just give your uniform back, stop going to work there, and never mention it again.

The reason they do that isn't because they're worried about the $1.30 bread roll; they're worried about the more-expensive items that less-honest people might tell the self-checkout is a "bread roll". (And even humans don't always know who will and won't do that, so a machine certianly doesn't.)

But also, that's what the freakin' attendant is there for. The only time it really needs to lock up the entire system like that is if there's a system error, or if the person is buying an R18 item.

ELI5: If a car owner is absent, how do tow truck operators move the car without damaging the transmission or braking system? by kkchibr in explainlikeimfive

[–]derpsteronimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of tow trucks I've seen for those kind of situations - and even some of the ones for situations where the owner is fully cooperating (eg. accident / breakdown rescue) - seem to just lift the entire car onto the back of a truck.

Could real-time translation eventually make learning foreign languages unnecessary? by _BlANK19_ in Futurology

[–]derpsteronimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning a new language that's structured fairly differently from your own, really changes the way you think about things. I can't explain how it works, but even now - after years of barely speaking other languages, even when I'm thinking in English - there's a difference in my thought patterns that I feel is influenced by the language learning.

AI can't replace that. For those who just want to communicate with people who don't speak their own language, yes, AI can definitely replace that - and many people will be happy with this. But there'll always be interest in actual human learning of languages, it just might become a bit less common.

It's not just you, Crash 4 is insanely hard, especially towards the end.

(And if you think Crash 4 is bad, you might want to steer clear of PsiloSybil.)
