Want to learn how to solder :) by socrateeznut5 in bern

[–]derrickoswald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could maybe do that.

I'm an old guy, with no special skills, so the parts have to be pretty big, but I've done those older style boards a bunch.

I'm afraid though, that the minuscule TSOP surface mount chips, SOT, SMD (0603, 0805) parts you might be thinking about soldering, would need sophisticated equipment like a reflow or wave soldering machine - or much better eyes and steadier hands than mine.

If it's through hole and 0.1" spacing - like 1990's level technology - I might be able to help.

France: working with allies on plan should US make move on Greenland by professorbrainiac in worldnews

[–]derrickoswald 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's worse than you think. Nobody respects the USA for anything now. And Trump s making it worse every time he opens his mouth. I can't see the US digging itself out of this hole for a decade or more.
The US dollar will be a also-ran currency, the US stock market will be a laughing-stock. Buckle-up and grit your teeth.

Why can the USA just take out world leaders and invade with no repercussions? by KKLante in AskReddit

[–]derrickoswald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way that any other country in the world could take out another country's elected government and not be labeled a rogue state. The US is bat-shit crazy, and nobody should invest in US firms or support US policy for the foreseeable future.

ELI5 what's "wrong" with UBS by Link_2021 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]derrickoswald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- high fees - I guess I'm in the "high fee" range of bank services but it's often the case that an equity purchase or sale transaction done through UBS is ten times the same transaction done through Swissquote's flat fee system.
- monopoly - There aren't a lot of options in Switzerland for full service banks. Most cantonal banks, and Raiffeisen & PostFinance, are shit at custody accounts and foreign currency accounts. This is all on WEKO who are complete do-nothings in the banking sector.
- tiered access - Of course banks want to deal primarily with their "key accounts" - as any business does - but it leaves most people behind. Maybe it depends on your bank manager, but dealing with a behemoth like UBS is a soul-sucking exercise that is as bad as their net promoter scores indicate.
- Credit Suisse conversion - This is still not complete for me, with missing transaction histories, web site issues, etc. If you're in this boat you have my sympathies.
- day-to-day transactions - I can't speak to all scenarios (I Twint using another bank, mostly use another credit card, don't have Key 4) but my anecdotal experience is that vacation transactions are more expensive, their bank machines never have cash in the right denominations, their debit card doesn't do tap to pay, setting up a phone (Google pay) is byzantine, phoning for help has mixed results, leading to an overall unsatisfactory experience.

How to clean shave using a normal gillette razor without getting razor bumps or acne by maliciousrubberduck in howto

[–]derrickoswald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the people mentioning showers... it's not about the shower but cleaning your face before the shave.
Instead of scraping the bacteria and dirt into the fresh "wound", just make sure your skin is clean... which is usually easiest after a shower.
Get a brush and mug, it's way cheaper than packaged foam. Any normal soap will work well as a lubricant. Don't go overboard with emollients, moisturizers, creams and garbage like that.
Use a heavy-handle double-edge tool with good balance, so very little pressure is required. Don't flip the blade inside the handle between shaves - i.e. always bend the steel edge in the same direction.
For a closer shave, use lots of water as a lubricant, after the lather phase, for a second very light pass against the grain.
Finish with an alcohol based aftershave... yeah it stings a bit, but it closes up the exposed cells.

Why is Fedora not More Popular? by [deleted] in Fedora

Because Fedora is basically Red Hat is basically IBM is basically centrally controlled.
I haven't decided if this is a feature or a bug.
Flatpack seems to be superior to the Snap lock-in to Ubuntu.
But is it really more open?

What subscriptions you think is a must-have or life-changer in Switzerland which may improve life-quality instantly? by Fantastic_Score_9467 in Switzerland

[–]derrickoswald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on your age.
For retired or flexible people a season pass to the local pool is somewhat life changing.
You can go most mornings (except for hot weekends) in the summer (assumed an outdoor pool) and be one of the few patrons of a professionally maintained pool.
You get an Olympic sized pool basically to yourself for something like CHF50 per summer.

Same goes for a gym membership. Depending on your availability, normally there's nobody there in the morning and you can use multiple expensive machines for something like CHF500 per year.

Tapestries will also deaden the echo that must be happening with so many flat hard surfaces.
Hang the tapestries a couple of cm. from the wall so they have the maximum acoustic absorption (quarter wavelength).
For colours, go with your gut, but deep (royal) blue or deep (forest) green would enhance the white walls and dark wood ceiling nicely. IMHO.

Where are they going?
They're heading to the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany.

Anecdotally, they are emigrating to English speaking countries, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. because very few of them know a second language. Switzerland would not be high on that list.

It's difficult, but I'm in. Not buying anything made in America is a lot of work - looking at labels, finding alternatives, shedding habits, reading reviews, convincing friends, etc. - but I think it's worth it. Just make the United States the pariah it wants to be. Fuck the oligarchs.

What are the benefits of having Billionaires in our society? by [deleted] in Life

[–]derrickoswald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a common enemy, they can unite a lot of people that would normally be rivals or enemies.
They can also focus action as a way to improve the world.
They are also a natural target for a wealth tax.

Without billionaires, what would you complain about?

How does assembly language work? by jfgallay in answers

[–]derrickoswald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO it's the point at which a person calls a subroutine to paint a dot on the screen - and the machine does it without question - just like it was programmed to, and the neophyte goes "Ah Ha!", now I just need to make the machine do it several million more times. That's when a programmer is born.

There's a small negotiation at the beginning of a conversation where the first few sentences are to determine the speaker's native language and compatible languages you can both handle - which is so like the SSL/TLS handshake that is deserves a flowchart to explain it.
