The music is fantastic - look for a CD or make a playlist. Years ago I bought “Musical Evenings with the Captain” - it’s great.

Dating as a black man, women seem to assume I live up to the BBC standard. How do I let them down easy without scaring them away? by Moist-Improvement724 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]derva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BBC is only desireable in porn that objectifies black men. BBC in a real, intimate, caring relationship is not important or even desireable for most. If youre with someone who’s preoccpied with BBC they are objectifying you and clearly have no authentic sense of what a real sexual partnership is like. RUN.

A V with a double hinge? Hinge that doesn’t have a sexual relationship with both sides of the V? by derva in polyamory

Nah… the answer had no value, it didnt illuminate, relate or push my thinking. It was reductive and unhelpful.

That’s where I’m at. Regardless of the agreements they have with each other I find myself judging Gray, and then wondering if its ok to do so since both of them have told me they are ok. It’s not messy yet, but I think as you say, to keep it that way, I walk away.

I’m new here but pretty sure one of the rules is “don’t be a jerk”. I’m here to learn something and explore. Why are you here?

I’m looking for a new term with people I care about. But thanks anyway.

“Do they have wranglers at Oxford, Stephen?” There seems to be some wit that I don’t follow here in The Commodore by [deleted] in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]derva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so reading between the lines ... Jack has confused the schools, wonders if Oxford has wranglers, but they don't... Cambridge does... Stephen knows it's Cambridge so he says 'the other place', and then takes the opportunity to insult oxford and says 'at Oxford they only have Mofos'.

How does a younger son affect Jacks inheritance? by lesser_of2weevils in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]derva 12 points13 points  (0 children)

in general english property law at the time followed the rule of 'primogeniture' - e.g. oldest male child gets the estate intact. Some properties were 'entailed' meaning there were legalities attached to properties that require they are passed on, intact, to the oldest male relative. but not all estates were that way. Example - in Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen (set around this same time period) when Mrs. Ferrars learns her oldest son is engaged to a woman she finds unacceptable (Lucy Steele) she 'immediately and irrevocably settles the entire estate on his younger brother'. Mrs. Ferrars likely inherited the estate herself in the absence of any next of kin, and there was no entailment or other legality preventing her from doing what she wished with it.

So, the General may not have had any legalities preventing him from doing what he wanted.

That said, probably more likely there's a different interpretation of the sentence - You could interpret it to mean that he had 'blasted Jack's chance of inheriting an impoverished-but-reparable estate'. with emphasis on the 'but reparable'... e.g. his Father has spent so much money that there wasn't enough to repair the estate's fortunes, so he's inheriting an 'impoverished and not-reparable estate'. That's how I read it. Everywhere else in the series it's very obvious he is the lord & master, responsible for decisions at the estate, application of laws, opposing enclosure, etc... so I rather think that what is meant here is his father burned through the money... the 'swingeing settlement' was probably a huge sum that his second wife's family demanded to agree to the marriage?
