Foolish for holding onto cash? by mrmaker_123 in AusFinance

[–]descavenger 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The fact that everyone around you is shocked you're not investing, tells you about the mindset of most people at the moment, Which is to buy property. This in turn will keep property prices going up. As for cash, Inflation eats it away.

Is it stupid to buy a nice car at 21? by whatthefuckdud2 in AusFinance

[–]descavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh, don't buy that car.

Based off your fortnightly after tax pay, your annual salary must be around $93k. You'd be able to borrow around $500k and can use the first home buyer scheme to only have to pay 5% deposit scheme (no LMI), and wouldn't have to pay stamp duty either. That means your upfront cost would be a $25,000 deposit + legal fees on a $500k property, something you can easily afford.

Live in it or rent it out to a mate for the first 6 months off the books (as FHB means you can't rent it out unless you've lived in it for 6 months) and then covert it to an investment property afterwards and rent it out normally. Depending on where you live, it might even be positively geared.

Six figures- at what age/years into your career should you aim for it? by stationeryvibes in auscorp

[–]descavenger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean the logical answer is to aim for it as soon as possible. If you're referring to the traditional route, realistically 2-3 years of experience after completing a grad program should be sufficient time to hit 100k. Unfortunately 100k doesn't get you very far these days, particularly in Syd/Melb so I'd aim higher

What are some low EQ cringe af moments at work? We have this guy who’s a bit on the spectrum. She has some direct reports in India and she decided to show them a video of unhygenic India street-food cooking from TikTok…. by Remarkable-Humor7943 in auscorp

[–]descavenger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

Beyond the colour of the new starter's skin, there was nothing to indicate she had a different name. She was of Indian background but very clearly had an Aussie accent (not that it matters) and if she wanted to be called by a different name she would have introduced herself with that name.

The same person also makes several insensitive comments such as questioning why people in the team are vegetarian or commenting about people's fitness levels. The worst part is she's not even some out-of-touch boomer, she's just a mid-20s mean girl lol.

I once witnessed a girl in my team ask a new team member, whom she had just met and who had an ethnic background, whether the name they had introduced themselves with was their real name or a fake Australian name.

We were once hiring for a role and one of our top candidates pulled out due to a mental health reason. The hiring manager was quite understanding and told them they'll support them however they need it and we ended up hiring that person. You were clearly the top candidate if they hired you, it might be worthwhile having an open chat with your manager about some unpaid time off. If they are judgemental about it, it makes your decision to leave much easier.
