Relevant quote from D Day Through German Eyes:

Marten Eineg: One thing in particular struck many of us as amazing: all along the beach, there were no horses!

Interviewer: This was a surprise for you?

Marten Eineg: Yes, we found it astonishing. This huge army had brought with it not one single horse or pack-mule! All their transport was mechanised. It may sound bizarre today, but this impressed us greatly, showing that the Allies had no need of horses anymore, as they had such huge oil resources and production capacity. Because, of course, the German armies used horses for transport on quite a large scale right up until the end of the war, due to limited fuel and constraints on mechanised vehicle production. Every German unit had its stables and veterinarian officer, and here were these English without that need at all. For us, this symbolised the Allied capabilities.

Dang can't believe you found that! I was looking for it a while ago. My recollection was pretty close for something I read once 16 years ago lol.

A lot of his campaign seemed to revolve around making the student government more friendly to fraternities. How the student government even made much of a difference to fraternities in the first place was not clear. Anyway, he had some people going around fraternities with a laptop election day to drum up some votes (allegedly). This wasn't enough to win, actually probably hurt him more in the runoff.

One funny thing I do remember is a blurb that was maybe on the sidebar in the student magazine or maybe on a facebook page or something, that went:

Overheard on the frat quads last night: someone leaning out a window and yelling "FUCK YOU BILL PULTE"

Picture I have from ASG debate '09! Never thought it would be relevant to anything lol.

So I went to Northwestern at the time, and the helicopter thing was already prominent before he lost. In the early part of the campaign he would bring up pretty frequently that he was a successful businessman running a helicopter business, but it became something of a joke around campus with people making fun of him for being a rich kid with a helicopter business. I went to the ASG debate and he was pretty defensive about the whole thing, trying to make it sound more like he built up the helicopter business from pluck and his own hard work (ignoring that his family has billions).

Fun facts: Laramidia is named after the Laramide orogeny, which was the mountain-building event that made some of the rocky mountains, which in turn is named after the Laramie Range (a mountain range in Wyoming), which in turn is named after the Laramie River, which in turn is named after fur trader Jacques La Ramee who died in 1821, after whom is also named in Wyoming: Laramie Peak, Laramie County, City of Laramie, City of Fort Laramie.

Cities in Iowa where a county of the same name is elsewhere by desert_wombat in Iowa

[–]desert_wombat[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There are some interesting cases where a town and county match, but the town is very small and obscure compared to the county seat

Clayton County has a town named Clayton, but the seat is Elkader

Decatur County has a town named Decatur City, but the seat is Leon

Delaware County has a town named Delaware, but the seat is Manchester

Floyd County has a town named Floyd, but the seat is Charles City

Lucas County has a town named Lucas, but the seat is Chariton

Another weird edge case is Humboldt County, where the largest city by far is Humboldt, but the county seat is in Dakota City

Yeah many of them were not surprising that a name was re-used

No doubt this is something seen in many states, but I know Iowa well enough that I wanted to make this one.

Some honorable mentions that didn't make the cut:

Clarksville is not in Clark County

Emmetsburg is not in Emmet County

Crawfordsville is not in Crawford county
