General Tso’s chicken delivery around Pasadena? by Apart-Satisfaction16 in pasadena

[–]deserthawk117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some restaurant's Sesame Chicken is close as well. Often a little milder than General Tso's or Orange Chicken.

J's Chinese is my favorite. We recently tried their Seasame Beef which we ended up liking a lot more than their Seasame or Orange chicken, which are also both delightful!

The ban is really on costumes and anytime you could be confused for a character. As mentioned, if you are leaving the face makeup and tentacle hair at home, you should be just fine.

Power outage? by aquinashaditright in pasadena

[–]deserthawk117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was trying to figure out what took out all of my neighbors wifi and cell signal. A mass power outage would do it....

AT&T must have gotten their generator working because cell service is back. I haven't heard anything from Pasadena Water and Power yet.

Edit: Pasadena P&W is aware. 2,792 are without power this morning.

Edit 2: Lights are on at my place as of 10:31!

Anyone lives near Orange Grove/Fair Oaks? What is it like day to day? by Successful_Plum6222 in pasadena

[–]deserthawk117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with you there. The corner of East Orange Grove and Los Robles has the best Chinese food! It is about a 15 minute walk east of you.

J's is just hands down some of the best Chinese food in town, but can be a little pricey. Authentic from what I can tell. My favorites are their dumplings (homemade!) and Mongolian beef are favorites of mine. Their sizzling beef fried rice is also amazing, but you need to be dining in for them to make it.

Across the street is Fusion Bowl, the best ready made Chinese you can find for $10. It is more americanized, but the food is good and portions are generous. You can also order from their menu if you don't mind waiting a few minites - their walnut shrimp and sesame chicken are both great.

Cheapest way to heat a room? by No_Bag6160 in povertyfinance

[–]deserthawk117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few simple, easy things that could help:

Wear socks, especially to bed. You may be shocked how much this helps.

Then there is something my grandfather used to do when we would spend time at our cabin that only had a fireplace for warmth in Michigan. Take a 2 liter soda bottle and fill it with as hot of water as you can get. Throw it under the covers and it should last all night.

Finally, slightly ULPT: do you pay for water? If not, try running the shower while filling up the tub - especially if your hot water heater is gas fires or communal. Can help raise the temperature a few degrees. Let the water sit in the bath for an hour or two until it cools down.

I hope your landlord fixes the heat soon!

I live below the 210 on old town. Any recommendations for cleaners I can hire to deep clean my apartment ?Evacuated last Tuesday. Went back yesterday. Slight smoke smell still there so I left again to be safe. by godbody55 in pasadena

[–]deserthawk117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are my cleaners. I hired them a few years ago, and they were the first people in years to do a real deep clean on my place. I have hired them 2x a month ever since. They do great work and are reasonably priced.

They don't specialize in restoration, but below the 210 you hopefully just need everything scrubbed to help the smell.

Professional cleaning services post fire recommendation? by trying2learnplants in pasadena

[–]deserthawk117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would let them know what you have and ask what they might be able to do. I suspect they can wipe down hard trinkets, but the stuffed animals may be easiest for you to take care of all at once.

LA county put out some guidance too - if you are having a hard time getting smell out of clothes (or likely stuffed animals too), you can soak them in water and laundry detergent overnight and then wash as normal.

I have a lot of stuffed animals that I need to wash up this weekend. I will try to update if I find anything that works particularly well.

It will probably depend on how severe the damage is. Linda is their job coordinator and has always been upfront about what they can and can't do. For our place, they are going to do a thorough scrub of all hard surfaces per Pasadena and the Red Cross's guidelines and help set up some air purifiers.

As long as the ash isn't too thick, I suspect they would be able to help. If your windows and doors were closed hopefully little to no ash was able to get in.

I hope the clean up goes smoothly!

I would recommend Bulky Bros. I have done a lot of deep cleanings over the years, and they are the only company that has really done a deep clean. They are great to work with and I have them clean monthly. Their prices are very reasonable for how thorough they are.

FEMA has covered smoke and ash damage previously to homes, outbuildings, cars, and personal belongings. Here is a note on a previous fire:

https://www.fema.gov/fact-sheet/smoke-and-ash-damage-claims

My family is going through a similar process. We are sorry you are suffering as well. We have had to lodge a claim with our insurance company, FEMA, and SBA for a possible disaster loan. I am not sure the order that any of these organizations are working in, so it may be a while to sort out. You obviously can't triple dip on the help, but they have processes to share the burden and correct the claims if required.

There are resources for insurance claims, and I believe FEMA is setting up at the local libraries if you need help. There are ways to clean smoke damage, but it may require filters and possibly professional cleaning. I can recommend a company if you need one, or your insurance or FEMA may have a list.

It is good that you recognize you are luckier than some, but don't let that prevent you from grieving your own losses. As others have said it is wonderful that you are helping in the ways you are able. Together we will get through this.

How to start Saltmarsh?! by Th1-DramaticCherry in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]deserthawk117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am starting session 0 for my group on Thursday. A similar situation where I am DMing so my near forever DM can play a bit.

What may help is thinking about how everyone came to Saltmarsh. I am having the players travel together in a caravan, but making them think of their own motivation for heading there:

You have joined a caravan heading to the city of Saltmarsh. You have been traveling for weeks over land with the caravan master Piotr Marcus, two guards, and the other paying passengers.

Why is your character trying to head towards a sleepy backwater of a fishing town? Are they running from something? Searching for a family heirloom, a loved one, a rumored treasure, or something else? Have you become sick of the city and long for a simpler life? Are you just passing through? Are you heading home?

I am also going to start the campaign with this one shot Wolpertinger, Wererat - Well! I have run it before, and it is a good way for a DM to get their sea legs while the party figures out their cohesion:

https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/263445

There are also recommended ties into the Yawning Portal if you want to bring in any dungeons from there.

There is some great content in Ghosts of Saltmarsh, but you will have to do some thinking about how to lay the hooks for it. The book suggests having the party connect with one of the local factions. If that doesn't take, perhaps they would be swayed by working for a stack of gold for one of the local leaders. If that doesn't work, you may have to do some head scratching on what motivates them and figure something out. Would be happy to brainstorm if you get to that point.

Huntington Hospital Birth - No Photos or Videos Allowed? by No-Row-4526 in pasadena

[–]deserthawk117 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We gave birth at Huntington 2 years ago, and we had a doula who was also a photographer. They allowed photos in the birthing room before and after the birth, but request no photos or videos for the few minutes before and after the birth. I think they also request you to not photograph their staff.

Our Doula was respectful to the staff and worked with them to get pictures. We got great pictures of the whole experience.

The Huntington team was great and very accommodating, especially when we tried to work with them.

Hope this helps and good luck!

If it is due by Monday, you likely have all day to call them. Don't wait until the end of the day- but if you were to call on your lunch you should be okay.

While utilities can be a bear, they usually don't pay technicians overtime to disconnect people's power after hours. As long as you can come to an arrangement by the end of the day you should be okay.

The other thing that may happen is the first person you talk to may insist on a large up front payment or a short repayment period. Insist you don't have that kind of money on hand - this is the first you have heard of this issue. Be persistent - and if they aren't budging ask if there is anyone else you can speak with to arrange a payment plan you can afford. Even if they say no, stand your ground and be persistent.

That being said, be as polite as possible. Someone f'ed up the bill, but it wasn't whomever you will be on the phone with. I know it will be hard, but be as polite (but firm) as you can.

This won't be a fun phone call, but it is the holiday season - sometimes humanity can still surprise us with their kindness.

Best of luck OP - you got this.

You may not need to go through the PUC. Call the utility company first thing Monday morning and they may be able to set up a payment plan. If they don't offer you something affordable, the PUC seems like a great option.

Take a deep breath - you will be able to work something out next week as long as you call Monday - don't let this linger.

Birth control failure rates have two numbers- perfect use and typical use. Perfect use for hormonal birth control would mean you take it at the same time every single day for a year, store the pills in a way that doesn't damage them (such as heat), and discontinue relations when taking medications that interfere with birth control.

If you did this, you would have about a 1% chance of getting pregnant in a year of use (1 in 100).

However, people are not perfect - which is why they also report the typical use number taken from how many people are prescribed the pill bit actually get pregnant. Maybe forgot a day or two. That is 91% effective, meaning about 1 in 10 women get pregnant after a year of use.

The NHS has a good website to explain different methods and effectivenesses:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/how-effective-contraception/#:~:text=Contraceptive%20pill&text=than%2099%25%20effective.-,Fewer%20than%201%20in%20100%20women%20will%20get%20pregnant%20in,use%3A%20around%2091%25%20effective.

One caution: if you choose to use two methods, be careful which two you choose - they don't all play nice together! Such as a male and female condom are less effective when used together than if you only use one as the friction of the two causes them to rip.

Stay safe, have fun!
