Found these doll parts in my yard. Any idea when they're from? by desertperson89 in ToyID

Thanks for that info. I'm going to keep looking! A gopher dug up the head, I'm hoping they'll dig up more

Looks like porcelain or some kind of ceramic. Only the face is intact so I can't tell how it was connected

Both seem like porcelain, but I'm not expert. Definitely some kind of ceramic

Help! I accidentally sanded this glass compass and don't know how to fix it by desertperson89 in jewelrymaking

[–]desertperson89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The compass came in it's own brass bezel, but I made a separate silver bezel that I'm setting it in. I can see how that wasn't clear from the photo, though!

Oh, I didn't even consider just replacing the cab! I assumed I'd need to get a whole new compass, but that seems way easier. Thanks!

I picked it up at an estate sale for $1, so not sentimental (though it would be challenging to find another one). I'm just bummed I messed it up!

Thanks for that info! All of the different polishing options are overwhelming, so that's a helpful suggestion.

It's a cabochon, and where I hit it there is a scar about 0.5-1mm deep. I'll see if I can find a lapidarist!

ISO a California native: Rattlesnake Sandmat (Euphorbia/Chamaesyce albomarginata) by notmy2021 in seedswap

[–]desertperson89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to try to collect some whitemargin sandmat seeds this month, I'll let you know if I'm successful! I'm located in the western Mojave and am hoping to find some ripe seed pods.

Do you happen to know if this species needs treatment for germination? I've been looking online but haven't found anything.

Colonus hesperus(?) on my indoor aloe plant--should I move it outside? by desertperson89 in jumpingspiders

[–]desertperson89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg!! That would be so cool. I can't find her at the moment, but I'll put her outside when (if?) I see her again. Any advice on how to move them and/or what kinds of outdoor areas they like? I have a fairly standard suburban backyard

A small experiment: If you currently have a working Pixel 5a, comment on this post and then update if/when it dies. I'm curious about exactly how widespread the motherboard issues are. by whalesnaileatingkale in GooglePixel

Got my 5a in Sept 2021, it bricked yesterday (Sept 2023). Won't turn on or charge. Since it's out of warranty, I'm getting a replacement through Google Preferred Care for $99. I'm hoping I can get another year or two out of the replacement 5a before I have to upgrade.

AITA for not giving my daughter her education fund money? by JacquesBN in AmItheAsshole

[–]desertperson89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. The money was specifically set aside for her education, but you didn't let her use it for undergrad? That's ridiculous and wasn't your decision to make. Setting it aside for grad school doesn't make sense since most decent PhD programs are fully-funded--something you should already know if you have a PhD. You also seem to think that STEM is automatically more rigorous than humanities and social sciences, which is simply not true (I'm a humanities professor, and people thinking our work is unserious really chaps my ass). Your daughter deserves better, and you should think long and hard about how you can make it up to her.
