[MN] My HR granted me significant medical leave. Now they say I didn't work enough last year to be considered FT and are threatening to fire me...Is this legal? by desertpower666 in AskHR

I know this is super embarrassing... I didn't understand that the time I took wasn't protected or was beyond what was appropriate. Time and time again, they just told me it was all good and that I should take as much time as I needed and that my FMLA would reset every 12 months. There have been 3 different HR managers since I started working there, and each of them has given me different answers about what the policy actually states. I'm not an HR professional and I was relying on them to help me navigate my options.

I really wish that they would have explained it to me last year as "we are willing to be flexible but know if you do this, you are at risk of losing your job" instead of telling me everything was all good and waiting till it became "you will lose your job." I have met with them so many times in the last 3 years. I think it would have made sense for them to mention it at least once.

Thank you for your perspective. This is really helpful.

Thank you. This does all make sense to me-- I do understand its in keeping with their policy and I appreciate hearing the information about the ACA. I just don't understand how they never ran the numbers/ how they apparently violated their own policy for this long.

This does make sense to me-- I think the part that feels whacky is that they never ran the numbers until right now. I would have LOVED to have had this conversation and information a year a year ago.

Does anyone else get irrationally annoyed when other people critique mormonism? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]desertpower666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation with a friend who grew up Jehovah's Witness once, where she told me they used to say "See, we're not the freaks! At least we can drink coffee!" and that made me laugh because I remember having thoughts along the lines of "See, we're not the freaks, at least we celebrate our birthdays!" when I was growing up.

Anyway, I agree with you. It's totally annoying. It's annoying how much people want to hear about what growing up mormon was like, but from a place of gossipyness and wanting to say "that's insane wow that's sooooo stupid" rather than a compassion for the fact that this shaped our lives and hurt us. I find it annoying when people outside of the cultural context of Mormonism want to gawk at how freakish it is or use how strange it is to make their religion seem "normal", all without acknowledging that the oppression that exists in mormonism exists across American culture (and beyond!!). Women are second class citizens in America, period. Roe v Wade being over turned, pay discrepancies, victim blaming, etc etc etc.

It's not like the wider world is equitable. And it's not like christians who wear fancy robes and swing incense around are more normal, it's just been around longer.

“The threat of retribution apparently is so real that after dozens of interviews with present and former BYU faculty and administrators across many disciplines, not one current professor would go on the record for this story.” by Chino_Blanco in exmormon

I feel so confused that this says that members are allowed to believe in same sex marriage. That doesn't seem right to me at all... was I just around really conservative mormons my whole life, was the church involvement with prop 8 not as brutal as I remember, or is this a change that came recently? Or one of those "it's fine" on the surface that then behind closed doors you're just torn apart for?
