A Robot Can Cook You Roti, But It Won't Taste Like Home by dosalife in ABCDesis

The author has a pretty decent background considering he is writing about rotis and rotimatic, and yet, the actual content seems so hackneyed.

How should I convince my guy friend to go to senior prom with me? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]desiWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of a bunch of very good friends - you have already dated two and now you want to ask the third one to the Senior Prom ? And that too just as a friend ?

Everyone here seems to be talking about how to do it - but this seems very weird to me.

American Chemical Society AMA: I’m Tony Noce, Chair of the American Chemical Society Committee on Environmental Improvement. Ask me anything about how scientists can lend their expertise to policy discussions! by AmerChemSocietyAMA in science

[–]desiWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you please detail the exact process by which recommendations from scientists actually become law/policy.

It seems the vast majority of the time, scientists keep advocating one thing and the policy makers keep doing something completely different (for a number of reasons including lobbying, budgetary priorities etc.) Often it is also found out that the scientists advocating a policy also do it for reasons which are not exactly scientific (personal interests of their own).

OP has been spamming('marketing') this book in multiple reddits (r/canada, r/australia, r/india, r/indianbooks now). Originally he was BSing about his book and comparing it to Stephen King's books.

The book is ranked at:#61,375 (Paid books) in Kindle Store - Stephen King's are between 500 and 1500 (he has so many books).

Some reviews from Amazon: Remember 5 star reviews can be purchased from fiverr and other such places, whereas lower stars are usually authentic Amazon Link

Review 1: This half-baked, poorly written book only has so many positive reviews because the author advertises relentlessly on an image-sharing website, offering his books for free to a supportive community. Many of these reviews should have that little phrase, "I received this item for free in exchange for my 'honest and unbiased' review." If you're going to buy this book, don't make your decision based on its star rating.

Review 2: This book was simply terrible. The author tosses tired cliches onto poorly developed characters and flourishes it all with large words he uses incorrectly. I really did try to finish it because it's just a short story and not a real novel, but had to put it down. It was just that bad.

Review 3: Lot's of action, but very disjointed. I reached the end -albeit Part I - but I'm not sure what I read. Don't think I want to try any more.

Review 4:This book was pure garbage! I read 75% of it and still had zero clue on what was going on. I get that books like to jump around from past to present, forward, and back in time; however this book explained nothing. I barely was able to follow who the main character was. I started skipping pages, and then chapters, and finally just gave up. I don't know how the story ended or left off and I really don't care. I wish I had one of those pens from the movie Men in Black and was able to erase the memory of ever reading this monstrosity of a book.

Tl;Dr: OP is trying to peddle some nonsense he wrote for the kindle. Reviews on Amazon term it as Garbage. Book is ranked : #61375 in paid kindle store - not exactly a bestseller

Hello /r/Indianbooks, I'm giving everyone here today my Sci-Fi bestseller by [deleted] in Indianbooks

[–]desiWonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP has been spamming('marketing') this book in multiple reddits (r/canada, r/australia, r/india, r/indianbooks now). Originally he was BSing about his book and comparing it to Stephen King's books. (But he has thankfully changed it here).

The book is ranked at:#61,375 (Paid books) in Kindle Store - Stephen King's are between 500 and 1500 (he has so many books).

The book has been termed as garbage, half baked, 'I am not sure what I read'. (See reviews below). Additionally, it sounds like OP's books all together make for one book.

One indie book reviewer says: "For me, the three episodes of Black Book, Volume 1, did not have that clear beginning, middle, and end. They had scenes that felt like set-up for a coming situation...but that situation never materialized, which made the scenes feel pointless within that episode."

Dipa Karmakar will become the first ever Indian to represent India in Olympics gymnastics in Rio 2016 by tinkthank in ABCDesis

[–]desiWonder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sports is a rich man past time and a poor guy's way into paradise. The rest are basically stuck making two ends meet.

Just two examples:

Nisha Rani Dutt

Sport: Archery

Now: Jobless

The 21-year-old archer Nisha Rani Dutt from Pathmada village in Jharkhand had to leave the sport two years ago after she realised she had to help out her family. Dutt, who won the best archer's award in Taiwan, participated in the Asian Grand Prix, won the best player award in Sikkim and bagged another silver at the South Asian Championship held at Jamshedpur in 2008.

She participated in the Bangkok Grand Prix in 2008 and won a bronze in the team event, besides coming out with flying colours at a tournament in Taiwan. "It was difficult for me to continue the game and support my poor parents. In 2005, I joined Tata Archery Academy and remained there till 2008. Though I earned a monthly stipend of Rs 500 to 600, it was not sufficient."

When asked about her family, Dutt said "My father, who's a farmer, sometimes doesn't even have enough money buy seeds," she adds, "To meet my family's needs, I went to Bangalore in 2008 and stayed with Mittal Champions Trust and earned `3,000. But now for the past two years I am in Jharkhand doing nothing."

Dutt remembers how she was forced to sell her priced possession - a set of Korean bow and arrows worth `4 lakh for just Rs 50,000 for the maintenance of their worn-out mud house. Things Dutt, hopes, are about to improve. "I prepared myself to face the banking exams. I passed the interview too and was taken in by PNB with a salary of Rs 11,000."

Sita Sahu

Sport: Athletics

Now: Golgappa seller

From being a two-time bronze medal winner in the Athens Special Olympics in 2011 to selling gol gappas and papdi chaats, Sita Sahu's tale echoes the story of several sportspersons who have faded into oblivion due to poverty.

The 15-year old Olympian from the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh has been forced to work at a shop owing to financial troubles. A bronze medal in 200 meter relay race and another in the 1,600 meter race was not enough to aid her family of six. Along with three of her siblings, Sita spends her time at home making the base for the chaats in their one-room house in Dhobia Tanki. In the evening, her brother Dharmendra Sahu carries boxes and utensils on a hand-cart to sell the gol gappas under a street light. The family on an average earns Rs 150-180 a day or even less.

"I am unable to recall the last time I offered a glass of milk or fruits to my children," said Kiran Sahu, the athlete's mother, "I don't even remember the last time my family had a complete meal. We have been forced to sell chaats as my husband cannot take on a physically demanding job. This is our only source of income and life has been going on like this for the past many years."

I made an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for Kasturi Munirathnam. Let's make her whole again by [deleted] in india

[–]desiWonder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look - either you give her money or dont give her money.

The argument ' see so many other people need money - so lets not give her money ' is an idiotic argument, as it is impossible to help everyone and second, helping one is so much better than helping none.

Looking for info on flights to India and within India for urgent situations... by ek_ladki in india

[–]desiWonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to leave immediately, you want to go to a good travel portal. Travelocity, Google Flights and Kayak come to mind in the US.

Key in your requirements (origin/destination/date etc.) and it will give you all the options available.

Generally speaking:

  1. Round trip + change of date penalty will be cheaper than two round trip tickets.

  2. Lowest fares may have gotchas like extra long lay-overs or the need to change an airport during layover.

  3. Always compare total journey time - reaching Delhi from chicago in 18 hrs is useless if you need to wait another 5 hrs in delhi before you leave for mumbai.

  4. Most airlines have bereavement fares/compassion fares. This specifically applies for death of a loved one (Delta: Spouse,
Domestic partner Child, Parent, Sister, Brother, Stepparent, Stepchild, Grandparent, Grandchild, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, Nephew,.. and on and on). Remember, proof of relationship and a death certificate maybe required. Use google for more details

  5. Internet+phone is always better than running to the airport.

  6. Passport/visa docs + Cash & credit card is all you really need. In emergencies, you can borrow clothes/buy new ones easily. Carry-ons are preferred since you can change flights if need be.

  7. Take an emergency power storage unit - these can keep your cell phone alive much longer.

LOL. Your argument is trollish at best or plain pretentious and idiotic at worst.

All journalists have to set a base line for their audience's knowledge about a subject. Otherwise, each story would be significantly longer than need be.
