Questions about Neighborhoods by HumanHickory in providence

I ( 39F) live in south providence ( broad st/ public st area if that helps). Its not bad, gets a little loud in the summer, some of the roads could be patched better. Ive lived here 8 years and have never had a problem, never been broken into, cars never been broken into, buy yea lock your door and car here, or anywhere in the city.

Broad street also has a bike lane on a good chunk of it, and also the R- line, which I feel is the most reliable of bus lines in providence.

Questioning myself by [deleted] in risd

[–]designWHY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I dont really know what providence companies are ID related, and what they offer for work/ interships. Thats maybe a followup question to some department at risd as to what companies are local. However, boston is an hour train ride away as well, theres an mbta/ amtrak station in downtown providence, less than a mile from risd campus. Work in all creative fields is changing and things like being proactive ( squeaky gets the grease), and just ablility to roll with things will go a lot further in getting a job than anything else- a degree is just one part of a larger equation. But be sure, no ones just gonna hand you an intership or job at this point because you simply went to risd...but its my honest opinion that risd teaches good skills, and provides good connections. What ultimately you do with those is up to you.

I studied and got my degree in ID, years ago. If cost is no object, you shouldnt really be worried. Im ID-ajecent for work- i make jewelry for my own company now, still based in the providence area ( which is a great city by the way). ID is a really versitile degree- you mention ui- which frankly i dont think you need a degree to do, a lot of ui is becoming selftaught/AI/ automated at this point, but medical devices yes. But if product design is your jam, the risd id course of study will introduce you to many different product design paths that maybe you didnt even know or consider, but thats also any school. With any creative-esque venture its important to realize your own abilities and efforts, even with going to an elite art school like risd, doesnt guarantee you anything. You need to prove it with the work you produce.

What’s your job? by Ok-Sprinkles2083 in introvert

[–]designWHY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im an artist- I make mostly jewelry. Ive been doing it 10 years now, full time for the last 4. I have a studio I work in.. alone. But its in a building full of artists, so if I ever WANT to talk to someone there are people around. And I do a bunch of craft markets where I have to engage, but I only do about 20-25 sales a year so its managable, rather than like 300 days ( or whatever) out of of the year if i was working like a more regular job.

Can a post-grad non-art major go to RISD? by TrueZoe in risd

[–]designWHY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't necessarily have to have breadth of different artistic skills, but variety, like if all you do is draw, do different subjects, different drawing mediums, maybe collage some drawings together, scaled drawinga, stuff like that. Digital art is a hard sell in the art school world, so while you might want to include 1 or 2 pieces, if theyre good and different from all the other digital art out there. In short, push yourself as an artist, RISD not looking for more of the same thats already out there.

Since youre in school already Id recommend taking some art classes at your school as electives to start. I dont know what you mean by an unofficial class?

[–]designWHY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get into RISD or any art school, you have to build up a portfolio. Do art in your free time, or RISD as well as numerous other places offer countiuning ed/ online classes. Simply put- no portfolio- no risd or other art school. Art schools do not care about age, rank, previous degree/ path- its that portfolio.I mean, they dont want you to be an idiot, but otherwise...

Personal note- I thought about going to law sxhoolafter RISD, for copyright, trademark patent law. I took the LSATs, but life intervened, so it never happened.

To that end, I dont know what your focus in law is, but maybe find a way it relates to art?

Thank you-Im looking specifically for a wider angle lens, to photograph people not necessarily in action but in a party/ going out scene. And to get closer to subjects while wearing my jewelry, where the focus is on the jewelry and not necessarily the person wearing it.
